Second Day in Hospital

May 01, 2010

Today is Saturday, my second day, I hear I will get to start clear liquids today!! Oh the excitement!, I heard from other patients to stay away from the jello, they swear it tastes like perfume. Seems that my room has a ghost, I have a large private room, twice the nurses have answered the intercom asking what I needed, when I never pushed the button, in fact the button was no where near me at those times, then this morning I was up early cruising the hallways and saw my nurse on one lap and the next one around she started laughing and asked if I stopped in my room and pushed the button, I had not, she said my help button had just went off, lighting up my thing and they were looking for me! Weird! Hopefully I get to either go all the way home tomorrow, or to the hotel for one night and then see my doc the next day and then be outta here, I miss my family, I have never been away like this, it really sucks to be alone in the hospital, but sometimes you just gotta suck it up and do what you gotta do.
I asked for broth, but she couldn't find any so they just brought me the dreaded jello! I took the tiny-est nibble and it does have a weird taste, oh well, its not like I will be eating much of it anyway. It is weird, I can feel even the tiny-est sip of water (like a drop) slide down my chest and gurgle!

From the hospital

Apr 29, 2010

Well, here I am in the hospital, my roux-en-y was yesterday, I had a lot of troube waking up so they must have given me lots of good stuff. I am allergic to moraphine so I have Lodnum in my PCA pump, that is an old pain killer from the cowboy days. My husband was with me up untill last night, he could have stayed and left thismorning but I told him to go ahead and go so he could be home with the kids and the critters, they finally took out the catheter thismorning and I was up and running then, well, not running but I got myself up and brushed my teeth and put on some pumpkin lotion and got my robe and did laps around the hallway. My Drs orders said he wanted me up by 7 pm last night, the nurse said they were having shift change then so they would get me up at 8 pm, then after 8 they told me they were too buisy to get me up so it would be latter! I got pnemonia that caused my lungs to start collapsing real quick after my hysterectomy so I know getting up and walking is a big deal, I also had a fever starting. I nicely told the nurse that I believed that the orders were to get me up by 7 they pushed it til 8, I was told that she has 15 other patients!! Well, well, well, I am a very patient person but I know that sometimes you have to be your own advocate so I said " If I get pnemonia again because Dr.s orders went ignored it would be the nursing staffs fault." Then I asked if the delay was cleared by my Dr.  They came 15 minutes latter and only let me go around the hall one time! Little did they know that I had already unhooked myself, got up, brushed my teeth, got my lap top and cell phone, hooked back up and got back in bed.  They just came in and my fever is gone, I can get the sperometer to the top and my blood pressure is a little low.

Pre op update

Apr 08, 2010

April 1st I drove farther than I have ever driven in my entire life to go to San Diego for my 3 pre op appointments, I have been much much farther away and have lived in 2  other countries but I usually am not the driver on long trips, my husband is a truck driver and he knows how to get to absolutely everywhere, I am a very solid sure person when I am in my element, but I am terrified of getting lost, so hubby took me and bought me a g.p.s. because he could not go with me, that little thing was the best invention ever and the best 2oo bucks I have spent in a long time. I took both my 15 and 6 year old with me, my teenage son just watched the little one while I was in my appointments and we went to the beach in Del Mar when I was done. Dr. Rumsey is my surgeon, I instantly liked him and he made me feel at ease and comfortable with him. That was a week ago today, he told me they would call me in two weeks, I have been really stressed because my Kaiser is ending at the end of this month!! Pacific had told me they will try to get me in and on the table by the end of the month, I hope they will be able to! If not I will have to pay a grip to keep it on Cobra. I want to call Pacific Bariatric soo bad but I don't want to bug them. I have not told my supervisor that I will be having surgery sooner that I had thought, I will just wait until I know the date for sure, I am hoping to be able to return back to work in a week or 2 tops.

Kaiser dropped the ball!!!

Mar 24, 2010

My pre-op options classes at Kaiser ended 6 weeks ago tonight, many that were in my class are having their first appointments at Pacific Bariatric this week, I called Pacific today and was told that they have my packet from orientation that I faxed them and asked me when my graduation date would be!! I then called and left a couple messages at Kaiser, they called me back and said they had not even sent my info because I was missing a weeks food and exercise logs! I did every one plus two extra ones for the weeks of Thanksgiving and Christmas when we didn't have to! She checked something and said I was not missing anything! No one ever notified me that they thought I was missing things, she said they should have notified everyone that was missing stuff twice before class was over! She said she would tell the nurse practitioner that runs the program right away, but it would take time to get all my paperwork together!! I don't know weather to cuss, scream, or cry! I would be much calmer about it but my husband is switching jobs and I will be loosing my Kaiser! The one who made the mistake did not even admit she made a mistake, say she was sorry, or act sympathetic about it at all.  I will be bugging them every other day until it gets done! I did everything they required plus some, God please let this work out in my favor!

I was the second biggest looser!!

Feb 14, 2010

Wednsday night was my last pre-op class at Kaiser, they pulled a bunch of us out of class and weighed us, we have weighed ourselves all these classes so I wondered if they were making sure that we didn't lie, then they started calling up the biggest loosers, and I ended up being the second biggest looser out of my class, I lost 13 point something % of my weight, translates to about 47 pounds. I was shocked and could not stop smiling as I walked up to the front and they gave me a water bottle and a shaker. I started these classes thinking I would never be able to loose the 10% required to loose before they send you on to the surgeon. I guess I was a better looser than I thought.
Now the hard part will be keep up with the food plan and not gain any while I wait for my appt with the surgeon. They say it can take up to a month so I better behave!

Happy B-day to me!

Jan 11, 2010

I am 39 today. 5 more pre-op classas to go at Kaiser and then on to the surgeon. My goal is to no longer be obese on my next birthday!  I know I probably won't be to goal weight yet by then, but should be well under way. So, I am feeling a little old today, but this year will be full of wonderful things!

One more step closer

Nov 24, 2009

Tonight I went to the seminar from Pacific Bariatric. I found out that they let someone stay right in your room with you during your hospital stay. That was good news and will save a lot not having to get a hotel for hubby for 3 or 4 days. Last Dec when I had my hysterectomy for cancer he stayed right by my side. I had complications and almost died, it was funny to me that I knew I must still be alive because I could hear him snoring!
My classes will be over in Feb. and they said after Kaiser faxes them everything it takes about two weeks to get the first appointment and about 4 to 6 weeks after that to be on the table. So, I am hoping for April. It still seems like forever away, but good things come to those who wait!
The seminar was given by Dr. Zorn, he is the one I already wanted to request, just from checking out their web site and looking them up on the medical board of California.

1/2 way done!

Nov 12, 2009

Last night was week 10 of my 20 weeks of pre-op bariatric options classes at Kaiser. I have lost 23lbs in the last 10 weeks, so I have lost more than 1/2 the weight I have to drop before the completion of the class. I was so worried I wouldn't be able to loose the required 10%. I have learned a lot from the nutrition classes, and having to turn in the weekly food logs really helps me stay on track. Never thought I could be excited to be 296 pounds, but I haven't been under 300 in over 7 years!
