Question:
Where do I start?

First of all, I would like to say that I am very happy to have found this site. I thought I was the only one in the world going through weight problems. Not the need to lose 10 pounds kind, but BIG weight issues. I am 25 years old, and as of my most recent physical a couple of weeks ago, am "healthy", with no heart, cholestoral, etc. problems. My BMI is 42. Can I get the surgery? Where do I start? My physician has never even brought up weight loss other than to say I should excersize more (which I already do). Do I go right to the surgeon? Do I find another doctor? I have been heavy all my life, and, well, you name the weight loss program, I've probably tried it. With no luck. This surgery sounds like it could finally be the key to my freedom from this weight problem, but I don't know where to begin. Any advice from those of you who have been through this stage already would be greatly appreciated!    — [Anonymous] (posted on October 24, 2001)

I was in the same boat as you. This is what I did first......I researched until I was cross-eyed. Once I made the decision that this surgery was for me I dug out my insurance policy to see if Gastric Bypass surgery was covered. Make sure if you call and ask you DO NOT say weightloss surgery. Most, if not all insurance companies will say NO they do not cover weightloss surgery. So ask about Gastric Bypass for morbid obesity. Ask what they require for approval. Then I called a surgeon that I found in my area, thru extensive research, and set up my consultation appt. He will determine whether you are a candidate for the surgery or not. After that, the surgeon's office will send in the paperwork to the insurance company and they will tell you what you need to do, if anything. It's a long process for some people. I had my consultation in July and my surgery isn't until January........good luck and feel free to email me.........Kim
