Question:
Will my Acid Reflux go away?

I have acid reflux from being overweight and I was wondering if this will go away after surgery. I am not on medication for it but it is getting worse as time goes by. Has anyone had this prior to surgery and after surgery it was gone.    — Nicole F. (posted on November 27, 2001)

YES! The RNY is a cure for acid refux because of the mechanical changes made during surgery. I had this problem bad and would awake choking. All gone since surgery.

I was extremely ill with reflux prior to surgery. I woke up after surgery with no reflux, and have never had it since. I also no longer take meds for it, and I'm only 11 days post-op. Good Luck!!

I had severe and constant acid reflux before surgery. Since surgery 12 weeks ago, it has been substantially less painful and less frequent. Also, my weight loss has helped alleviate this problem. Before I became MO, I never had a problem with acid reflux. I am sure that as the weight continues to drop off, this comorbidity will become extinct. Halleluia!

I can only answer for rny, but the way my dr explained it is: the pouch is stapled off above the vargis(sp?) nerves. It's those nerves that produce acid. Since you no longer have acid in your little tummy you no longer have acid reflux, however, the trade off is whatever breaking down food does before it reaches the intestines happens in your mouth. That is one of the reasons we have to chew and chew, because food won't become further broken down by the acid in our tummies. Good luck, I had horrible acid reflux, lived on tums and pepcid and since surgery I have been cured completely.

Yes!! Yippee!! I had horrible problems with reflux. So bad that Zantac didn't work, had to take the Prilosec. If not, would wake up choking, then wheezing the rest of the night. My doc said that after surgery I would never have to take Prilosec again. He was right. I am 18 days post-op and no problems since day one.

WLS took care of my problem. I used to have sleep apnea as well as acid reflux. Not only did I quit breathing alot, but acid would back up while I was sleeping and I did'nt wake up until I was gasping for air. Anyway, I have'nt had a problem with ether of these since surgery. Hopefully it will stay that way. I think WLS helps "most of us" with this problem.

There is one in every crowd, right? My acid reflux is back. I used to have severe acid reflux and had to have two Prevacid per day. Now, I am back on one prevacid per day. I am still being treated for sleep apnea, still on a c-pap machine and I am 5 months post-op and 104# lighter now. Somehow, I am relating this to after being on my iron and vit c supplements for several weeks....maybe just a coincidence, but I always avoided anything that could trigger my stomach.

Mine went away and when my staple line disrupted, I had it again. This was one of the first signs that I had a disruption. Had my pouch redone and transected this time. Now I don't have acid or heartburn at all. I didn't think it was possible to have stomach acid with rny. That is why I knew I had a problem when it came back. The old stomach produces acid, but the new pouch doesn't. Right?

I have not had the surgery yet, but acid reflux is one thing I am praying the surgery will fix. I suffer from severe GERD and I currently take Previcid (2 per day) and Tagamet (3 per day). Glad to hear that the surgery does help it for most people, because I know it is miserable! Sheryl

Well I hope it works for you. However it has not helped me at all. I will be 3 months post-op on October 2, 2002. I have it everyday!!!! I use to only have it when I ate spicy food, or too much of anything but no its constant and in all honesty I am miserable. I was also told this would cure it. Not always true. I'm working with a great gastrologists though so hopefully in time everything will work out. It is a small percentage that will suffer more severly after surgery but theres still a percentage. I had the RNY Distal. I'll pray you have better luck than I did.

Pre-op I had reflux so bad I would frequently wake up in the middle of the night in pain, and gagging/sick from the acid backing up in my throat. I had open RNY 22 months ago ... and I haven't had any problems with reflux xince surgery! I hope you have the same positive experience.

I've had two episodes of acid reflux since surgery (09/03)and both were very early after surgery. My doc told me to take one pepcid AC every morning for the first year. That would help with the reflux and also help prevent any ulcers. So far, so good. No more reflux and no ulcers. Some people do still have reflux so if you have it, make sure you tell your doctor since it can be a pre-cursor to ulcers.
