Question:
10 days post op and have cheated--have I ruined everything?

I know I have made a big mistake. I am 10 days post-op and yesterday had 10 Doritos, 4 cookies, 2 pieces of ham. I guess I thought I would get sick - but I didn't. Instead everything stayed down - I know it had to be more than 3 oz. Is it too late to go back to doctor's rules? I really want to make this work and was doing ok until yesterday.    — Jennifer C (posted on March 20, 2002)

STOP! first relax.<P> The chips and cookies are a bad choice, but the ham is good protein! You DONT want to do a lot of this, because it can slow your loss! But just between the 2 of us I did the same thing occasionally very early on. Check my profile I still lost 125 pounds. Doritos are mostly empty calories but the grind to dust but helped my need to chew something crunchy. So try to avid making a habit of it, and limit to one hopefully sugar free cookie a day. But dont stress you didnt ruin your surgery, your just being human:)

Take a deep breath, think about WHY you got the surgery, and focus for a few minutes on your committment to your health. Now, with this done- get back on the wagon and continue on your journey. At about 2.5 weeks out, I slipped and ate a Klondike bar, the guilt was AWFUL! And I had never been one to really beat myself up about cheating. But this time, I was SOO mad at myself. I had to make the committment again. I have been doing pretty good. I don't deny myself everything, but I don't have much of anything 'bad'. For example, I ate a BITE of my friends peanutbuttercup cyclone from friendly's instead of getting my own (I think that was the BEST thing I have ever put into my mouth!!). Anyway, you haven't ruined anything, you are still learning and adjusting. Just remember how you feel now the next time you go to open that chip bag. Instead chose something healthier (I don't know your docs orders, but I eat a little popcorn, a pickle, a couple crackers, a slice of cheese...). I can usually find something that is 'good' for me that will satisfy my urge for a snack, as long as you keep track of calories and don't 'graze'. Good luck with the rest of your journey! You can do it!! :)

Did you eat all that at once? If you ate it over a longer period of time it is probably not too much volume-wise. Don't beat yourself up. If we were perfect we wouldn't need surgery, right? It is never too late to get back on the plan. It is really hard to be on a liquid and soft diet. We have the urge to chew. I hated liquids but made it by eating popsicles, sf/ff ice cream bars, and soup put thru a strainer. You do need to follow the dr's advice especially right after surgery. Even though your outsides look pretty healed up, your insides are still swollen and tender. Be kind to yourself an let your body recover from this major surgery. If you don't get sick and/or dump from sugar at this stage you may be one of the few who don't. You will have to realize this and keep an eye on yourself to stay on track as you won't have the dumping to keep you in line. Good luck. You can do it!

Honey don't beat yourself up...you are just a HUMAN BEING. We are not perfect all the time. I had the same problem so I have been keeping a journal as to when I want to eat things I shouldn't and the reason. I found out that it is usually because I am bored or frustrated (Need to look for a more challenging job, as I only want to snack at work). Just start over right now, and if you mess up again keep track of what is triggering that need. Are you really hungry or is something else bothering you. Hugs

GF!!! Shame on you, LOL!!! Hun, you haven't done anything that 99% of the rest of us didn't do!!! Don't worry so much over it!!! Commit yourself to getting a better start tomorrow :) One thing that helped me was keeping a journal of what I ate, and I still do it when I feel my eating is getting out of hand. It helped going into the kitchen and seeing it laying open on the counter, seeing what I had already ate & knowing I didn't need more. I also have some fat & thin pics on my fridge, it helps me remember why I had my surgery in the first place. Don't worry about what you had today, tomorrow is a whole new day :)

My guess is that if we are all honest, we've all done something like this at one time (or more) post op. The way I look at it is like this: "Nothing is forbidden, but don't go overboard". Hungry for a big juicy candy bar? (who is'nt). Get just a small piece and savor it. Better yet try to go sugarless. I still eat some deep fried fish, but I don't make a habit of eating anything deep fried. It's just a treat once in awhile. Don't beat yourself up about it! Eat alittle and enjoy, then let it be for awhile. Try to make wise choices 90 % of the time. A few tasty and fatenning things once in awhile is ok. We just can't live on it all the time. ;)

Yup, ya screwed up. Oh and it is too late to go back to the doc's rules. Instead, just continue to eat the doritos, cookies and ham. Honey this is just a tool. You can use a screwdriver to push a nail in the wall, but a hammer does a much better job. Get it? You decide how to use the tool correctly. Eating the wrong stuff will probably slow your weightloss (oh you'll still lose weight cause you're not eating in the same quantity) -- hence you're still achieving weightloss, but you're not using your tool effectively. And after your window, it will be much harder to get off the final few pounds and keep it off. Go to counseling to discuss the reasons why you don't care enough about yourself to not sabotage your efforts. Good luck and God Bless.

DON'T LET THE RUDE RESPONSE GET YOU DOWN. Think about how many doritos you would have eaten pre-op... 20? 30? A whole bag? How many cookies? 8? 10? A WHOLE BAG? And there's nothing wrong with ham unless your doc told you not to have it. Ham has protein in it. DON'T WORRY. Keeping a log of what you eat as recommended by a previous poster is a great idea. I use www.fitday.com to log mine and it helps me count my protein and carb intake. This surgery is a tool, yes, but we are human. I say everything is okay in moderation. If you snack you will lose slower, that's all. Drink lots of water to keep it moving through and try again tomorrow. Don't deprive yourself. If you're craving sweets do sugar-free stuff. If your craving carbs get a protein shake or have a couple crackers. When I crave cookies I eat shortbread. VERY low sugar count. The baby arrowroot biscuits are perfect. GOOD LUCK TO YOU. Keep your chin up and don't let the turkeys get you down.

Jennifer, you did not screw up. I don't think I have read ONE profile on here that someone didn't eat something they thought was bad, WE ALL DO. Just get back on track, and start over again with your docs directions. You've lived many years as an obese preson, eating all kinds of food, and it is hard to give up, I know. A slip here and there is not sabotaging yourself, your a HUMAN. It's not too late, and if you get back on track , you'll be just fine. I have lost close to 140 lbs in 8 months and have slipped here and there, have I failed? Sabotaged myself??, No, I don't think so. Good luck to you, and e-mail me if you want to chat.

Did you ruin everything - NO! Did you make a mistake - YES! So, as most of the rest of the posters wrote - you are in good company. Everyone makes a poor choice once in awhile. Don't beat yourself up, just carry on bravely. I'm surprised that you could handle what you ate at 10 days out. I'd have thrown it right back up. If your pouch can handle eating like that already, you must be healing quickly.
