Question:
Many Post-ops report return of appetite at about 6 months out....

...has this NOT been the case for anyone? Or, is return of the "ravenous beast" inevitable?    — [Deactivated Member] (posted on September 12, 2002)

At 6 months I was at goal, start 313 then 190, I lost fast. My appetite did return, but its not ravenous as before. If I am busy I can easily go all day wihout eating. Right now I am working 12 to 16 hour days, my business.

Some days I have the munchies, others I am not hungry at all. So on the not hungry days I eat little, which allows a bit more on the bad days. DEFINETELY not as hungry as pre op.

I had my surgery on July 16, 2002. I had an open Gastric Bypass. I have no appetite what so ever. Sometimes when I think of food I get sick to my stomach. I east because I have to. If my appetite would return just a little bit of being normal I would be happy. Would like to hear from other post-ops also.

Loretta, you are NOT 6 months out as the question asked. Naturally you are not hungry at two months out. Wait until you are 6 months out and you will be sorry your hunger has returned. I have had a few days (maybe 6-10) since the 6 month mark that I absolutely had a "bottomless pit" of hunger. This really scares me. But it only lasts a day, then I eat "normal" (for WLS) again. But in any case, since I was 6 months post op my hunger has come back and I do have to be extremely careful. I WISH for the days when nothing looked good, tasted good, and the aroma of food made me feel like vomiting. I wish there was a pill I could take that would make it like that again.

hiya loretta, i'm a little confused about the 1st guy's answer...but here is my two cents i think my appetite came back around 9 months or so but all i mean by "appetite" is that i became aware of being hungry. i absolutely cannot eat what i ate pre op(in volume or content)and i keep little high protein easy snacks around to nibble on when i get hungry...stuff like nuts, dry roasted garlic flavored soy nuts, apple slices w/peanut butter, string cheese and i drink lots of water all day long. if i allow myself to go too long without eating, i feel the low sugar presence and the first thing i want to eat is a high carb snack so i try to keep mindful of what my body is telling me and steer myself towards proteins. of course you do need some carbs/fats/sugars for your body to function properly... if you eat sensibly and drink lots of non or low calorie drinks you should be fine. remember - you can't eat more than like 8 oz because your pouch should be no bigger than that. our surgery is a tool - you need to learn how to differentiate between body hunger and head hunger. please feel free to email me anytime. I will be 6 months out on the 22nd. My hunger returned way before 6 months. Last night at the support group meeting the dietician said okay for snacks but make them a protein snack like cheese, this way your protein intake is up and protien keeps you full longer than the carb. Or I just drink a hot cup of tea. I guess the heat swells up the stomach to think its full. Plus this helps me to get all my liquids in. The hunger comes back but there are ways to treat it and still loose weight.

The honeymoon ends at different times for everyone....mine was over at 11 months but the full hunger didn't return until about 14 months! It has now become hard work to keep from not eating to much...I put an old picture of me on the fridge and that helps a lot....I am down 200#.

I'm 15 weeks out, and my hunger returned (off and on) at roughly two months out. If I don't eat regularly, I feel intense physical hunger (which is different from head hunger) and I gotta eat. If it's head hunger, I drink something, and unlike my pre-op days, that often works to quell the hunger (which was really thirst). Otherwise, I use protein snacks when hungry -- turkey, tofu cheese, turkey pepperoni, stuff like that. Sometimes, a small yogurt with half an apple. What's different about hunger NOW is, it doesn't take much to kill it off, whereas pre-op, little snacks like that were a prelude to some BIG-time eating. Not anymore. Hope it stays that way!

I will be seven months tomorrow. I have never been one of those people who have to remind themselves to eat, not even at 3 weeks. But, even now I am never nearly as hungry as I was before. I do get hungry at least once a day - my body tells me when it needs food. Sometimes I think I am hungry, but know that I am not really, so I don't eat. I have been living the last 7 months with a very structured eating schedule, it work for me. As long as I know that I will be eating again soon (b/c my shcedule tells me so), I won't snack now, even if I think I am hungry. But, occassionally I do need a l'il something in between and I'll have some nuts or a piece of a protein bar. Hardly a ravenous beast though, this new kind of hunger.

I am exactly six-months post-op. I had an appetite from about 1 month out. However, it's not the same as it was pre-op. The urge is a lot weaker, and doesn't happen as often. It still only takes about 3 ozs to fill me up. So having an appetite is not all bad. The "Tool" really helps keep things in check where food and hunger are concerned.

20 months for me. And then, nothing like before. But then, I've always drank protein supps. One side affect is appetite reduction. Maybe 3-4 times per year, I get a munchies attack. I beat them back with a protein drink. I get odd cravings, though Like celery. Who'd ever think *I* would get cravings for celery?

I never totally lost my appetite ... I experienced true, no kidding, stomach growling "hunger" (not HEAD HUNGER) while still in the hospital. The difference was that I actually got full ... really fast at first. Food always still tasted good, I still enjoyed food and I never, ever ... not even once forgot to eat. What changed over time was the type of foods I could tolerate ... and the amount. Even so, it still takes much, much less volume to satisfy my appetite than it did pre-op.

I wil be 4 months post in a few days and I have had hunger since about 2-2 1/2 months post. the diference from before is that the hunger is so much different. Before it was a constant gnawing in my gut telling me to "eat alot and do it now beore you starve to death"! Now, it's if i wait to long for a meal, I'll get the tiniest pang of hunger it is ignored if I'm particularly busy that day. I guess everyone's different.
