Question:
How long after dialation should I still be having pain?

I had a balloon dialation 2 weeks ago, and I am in severe pain. It has reduced to just the left side now, but I can't take it much more!! My gastro. doc didn't think I should be having any pain, and my surgeon, just says yep, you'll be sore for a while!! This is NOT soreness people, this is PAIN! It hurts just like it did post-op from open RNY. I've been trying to swallow Tylenol gel-caps, but I'm not really getting any relief from the pain. Any suggestions? Thanks.    — Terri Z. I am not sure what the baloon dialation is but I had major pain for more that 2 weeks after surgery if I moved a certain way. Surgeon figured a nerve had gotten caught in a stitch. He prescribed cebrex to reduce swelling and it took care of. Could this baloon procedure have touched or moved a nerve. They are nasty little things, also adhesions can cause major shooting pain.

I had 2 dilations done around week 3 & 5 post-op. I never had the pain that you describe. In fact I was 'ordered' to go eat something solid, so I had a chick-fila sandwich (part of it) and did just fine. You shouldn't be having any problems. I would be more persistant in calling them and telling them that you are in pain. Call your gastro again, he knows what is normal following the dilation.

I had 6 dialations with no pain at all! Call your GI Dr, He may go in and check for more problems. You wont have pain from a dialation!

At one month out I had to have nerve blocks in my right ribcage. The pain was radiating everywhere and it was hard to tell exactly where it was coming from. Take a deep breath & hold for three seconds. Did the pain increase on the side that currently hurts? Yes, it's probably from the retractors they use to "open up" our ribcages during surgery. If no, I'd phone your GI asap. Best of luck to you!
