Question:
Is there anyone with Kaiser insurance in California?

I am insured, under my parents with Kaiser. Is there anyone who can refer me to a surgeon who is covered by kaiser? Also, what steps can one take to get started? Do you just call your insurance or do you have to find a surgeon first? I was very confused by these steps when I was doing my research. Thanks!    — Ashley T. (posted on November 20, 2002)

Hi Ashley, I do not have Kaiser, but I know of two people who do. Both of them have consulted with their primary care physician and one was then referred for a psych. consult, and then to a surgeon. He has a way to go before the surgery will be done, due to a mental condition losing the weight has been difficult. My other friend had mentioned WLS but is fearful of any type of surgery, so I cannot imagine her going much further with this issue. The first step is to talk with your PCP, I bet he/she will refer you to a nutritionist first. As I've read that is the case with Kaiser most of the time. My suggestion is this: If you want the surgery bad enough, you will be patient, and you will jump through all the hoops, twice if need be. Good luck, and keep us posted. Feel free to email me anytime. Blessings, Lynnette

I had WLS with Kaiser- they contract with Pacific Bariatrics in San Diego. You need to be referred by your primary care MD, and approved through a committee. Call your appointment center and ask to be booked with someone who supports the surgery.

I have Kaiser and live in Sacramento. I have a surgery date of Dec 10th with Pacific Bariatric. I had to first go to my primary care dr and he had to send a request for approval. then you have to go to a health ed class . Then your paper work goes back to your reg. dr. and he signs off then your paper work goes to south San Francisco for review by the surgeons there. If you get approved then they decide if you will have surgery in ssf or if they will pay to send you to San Diego and it is all paid in full by Kaiser. If they send you to the Pacific Bariatric in San Diego they pay the air fare as well as your hotel stay. but only for you not your family. Hope this helped.
