Question:
Can someone tell me if this is the right stuff??

While shopping at Walmart today I decided to check out prices on some of the nutritional supplements that post ops need. I noticed that some were on clearence, and so I went ahead and bought them. I'm pretty sure I've got the right stuff, but just want to ask to make sure. I got calcium citrate + vit. D added, carbonyl iron, and sublingual b complex (which was the ONLY sublingual b-anything i could find). So, did I get the right stuff?? Thanks for any responses. :o)    — Cat S. The calcium is fine. The b is most likely a combo and not right. If it has 1000mcg of b-12 in it then you can still use it. I can't address the iron as my surgeon does not have us taking any additional than what is in our multi-vitamins.

I probably should have mentioned that I am anemic, and currently take 3 ferrous sulfate tablets a day. And the B complex that I bought has, as listed: riboflavin 1.7 mg, niacin 20 mg, vit b-6 2 mg, vit b-12 1,200 mcg, and pantothenic acid 30 mg. Hope this will help more!! Thanks again. :o)

For Chris and anyone else (especially menstruating women) whose doc does not prescribe iron supps...watch your ferritin VERY carefully, expecially after 2-4 years out. I'm now menopausal, but my last labs (open RNY 8/99) showed a sharp drop in my Ferritin. I get copies of my own lab reports, and I found the drop, not my doc....still within "normal" ranges, but barely, and I take iron, but was taking 1 a day, not 2 as prescribed. Again, I've been fine (in mid-ranges) until 3 1/2 years out...that's when the values can take a real drop, as the body has used up all the extra stores of vits. Just please, BE CAREFUL! Remember, just because your doctor says something, doesn't make it so...they often only take one 1-hour nutrition course in Med school!

I think you are alright with the carbonyal (sp) iron. I have read on here that ferrous sufate is not easily absorbed by rny'ers. I could be wrong. Anyhow, I don't think you are supposed to take any kind of iron unless your labs come back bad and your doc tells you to.

Sounds like you are on the right track. Where's the magnesium? Is it included, per chance in your calcium citrate? B complex is good, You may do good by getting the B12. Check with the Vitalady, she could really be of GREAT help as she has been for many on this website. She has a lot of experience and has really helped me tremendously. As a matter-of-fact, I recently received my 6-month lab results, (other than what my surgeon saying that I needed to stop my B12), they were FANFABULOUS!!You can't go wrong!
