Question:
Has anyone been denied due to the 5 year rule?

My insurer..Regence Blue Shield Boeing Traditional requires a 5 year hx of being 100 pounds overweight. However, I am short (5'2) and my weight for the last 5 years has been 208-238 (BMI= 37-44). They say they use Minsurance height/weight tables to figure out "ideal weight" however the only tables I can find show ranges... So what are they basing the 100 pounds overweight on? The low end of the range or the middle of the range or the high end of the range? I'm concerned that Regence only looks for 100 pounds overweight and not BMI or co-morbidities. Will I be denied if they think my ideal weight is actually (for example) 115 and 208 is not 100 pounds over that?    — nicoleinseattle (posted on August 21, 2003)

I just did a search on height weight tables and the low weight for a small frame is 108 for 5'2. So just get your surgeon to indicate you are a small frame and have weighed between 208 and 238 within the last 5 years and that the standard for someone like you is 108. Don't panic till you get denied. Just go for it. If you have any co-morbs of any significant nature you will most likely be approved.
