Question:
Need help re: protein...

I don't even know what I'm really asking, I just need to know if anyone has been in the same boat and what you did. I'm 2 weeks 2 days post-op, and I cannot stomach my protein. I have tried many drinks, such as metrx, isopure, nectar, rtd40, etc. Just thinking about drinking it makes me want to puke. I am waiting to receive real meals to try, but I'm concerned because I know if I don't get my protein in I'm going to be in trouble. I have tried to force myself to drink them and I just haven't been able to finish one. Is there anyone out there who has had the same problem????????? I'm worried.    — beeda (posted on August 27, 2003)

I am really greatful that my Dr. said the first month to focus on getting in the fluids. I was on liquids and they said no one gets enough protein at that point. I did use the designer whey protien powder and mixed it with milk for even more protien.

Try EAS advantage carb control drinks. Then are very thick and can go down pretty easy. I hated all protein drinks until I came across them. They are good!!

HI Debra, I was the exact same way as you with protein. Then I tried ultra pure protein premixed. They are good although can be costly and are pretty sweet for me. Then I tried Real MEals and have been happy with them since. I mix 1/2 package with skim milk, 1/2 banana, strawberries and a pack of splenda with ice in the blender for a yummy shake. It takes me a while to drink it but it is actually a treat for me in the evenings or I add a yogurt and have it for breakfast. This is the only way I can get 60-70 grams of protein a day because I surely can not eat enough to get that much out of food!!Wendie S 7.11.2003 RNY down 33lbs

It may just take you a while to get used to protein shakes. Your still a very new post-op and may do better with the type of protein powder that you sprinkle in to soups and into liquids like crystal lite for a little while. Then, try a protein shake every now and then. Eventually your tummy will calm down and you will be able to handle them...

A few weeks with less than optimal protein won't hurt you in the long run, so don't worry too much about it. As you heal and are able to tolerate more kinds of food, you'll pick this up. I had the same problem as an early post-op on liquids: I just couldn't drink the shakes. My dietitian suggested that I drink "double protein" milk during this phase. "Double protein" milk is simply powdered milk mixed with skim milk. Follow the package directions on any brand of powdered milk, but use skim milk in place of water. It gives double the protein of plain milk. If you're not lactose intolerant, this might help. Trust me, this gets lots better real soon. This early on, it's more important to get enough liquids than enough protein.

Hi yes I was same way at first I could not find a good protein drink that I like but I order lost of samples and even went to my local health food store and got samples and I finally found one I like, Im now drinking Keto Slim It only has 2 grams of Carbs no Sugar and 23 grams of protein, I mix it with water and two scoops of Sugar Free Decaffeinated International Coffees and it taste great, I think the key to finding a good protein shake is just trail and errror. Good Luck!!Teena~350/250/180

Just putting in my vote for Champion ProScore 100 chocolate shake protein mix. It's soooo good mixed with water OR milk. I tried about six other shake mixes, and to put it mildly, they SUCKED! hee hee :o) Anyway, just thought you ought to know there is a good chocolate shake protein powder out there.

You CAN find a protein that you like! 1. Go to Vitalady.com, and read the product descriptions, and product comparison page. 2. Decide what kind of sweeteners you like, and what kind of flavors, textures. 3. Then order a bunch of samples of ones that fit your criteria . . . Then just try 'em out. I wrote notes on the labels of ones I tried, peeled off the bags, and stuck 'em on the 'puter. Then when I was ready to order, I knew which ones I had like, and why. My repertoire? Champion Nutrition's Pure Whey Stack (all flavors), Proplete Gold Pineapple-Vanilla & Mixed Berry Blast, Nectar Cherry-Berry, Apple Ecstasy, and Kiwi-Strawberry, and many of the SciFit flavors, especially Coconut Cream Pie, and Weider Grape. Find a protein powderthat you like mixed only with water and ice. Mix with 4 oz water, shake or blend, add a few ice cubes, shake or blend again. Drink. Do NOT add milk, yoghurt or fruit. Yes those things taste yummy, and they add a LOT of sugar, which will cause you problems at some point, even if it doesn't make you dump now. You can add sugar free syrups, extracts, a little peanut butter, SF JEllo powder, SF Tang, Crystal Light, Unsweetened KoolAid powder, etc. to change/add flavor. Or mix flavors - I use 1 scoop Stack Cocoa-Moccachino and 1/2 scoop chocolate to make an awesome mocha frap. Somethimes I warm the water a little (just a little hotter than room temp - hot destroys the protein. Sometimes I add orange extract for Mocha Valencia. I use equal parts Choc, and orange proteins for choc orange, ditto for choc/strawberry, orange/pineapple/banana - I just use a total of 1.5 scoops for 30 grams of protein per serving. Good luck - hope this helps.

I cannot stomach the protein drinks either. It is not so much the taste as it is how it makes me feel. I mean I get dumping from them. I have tried different kinds, even protein bars. I think I am unable to tolerate soy. I am 7 months post op and have not had one complete protein shake. I try to eat as much turkey, chicken, tuna and lean ground chuck as I can tolerate, but for the first 3 months I did not get any protein and believe me it has made a toll on my muscle mass and hair loss. Please please don't give up on finding a protein supplement.

I didn't start protein supplements til I was about 3 months post-op, with my surgeon's approval. Nothing tasted good at the early stages and he said that we had enough to do us for a couple of months without worrying about supplementing. By the way, I'm almost 20 months post-op and my labs have been text book perfect every time. Patty

The first few weeks post op taste can be a problem. Like a previous poster said, it is time to just concentrate on fluids. That said, I found a protein drink at Vitalady, Banana Scream. It is a Whey product, but best of all it has no Aspartame(sp). It uses splenda. Samples are the way to go.

I am a huge fan of the Realmeals protein drink. I have 2 a day and think of them as a real treat. I mix mine in the blender with skim milk, ice, and fruit. It taste so very good. You can get them off the internet and they are kinda expensive ( I think ) but well worth every penny!Good luck. you still are pretty new at this. In time you will figure out what works best with you. I know GNC has a good return policy. If you don't like it after trying it they will take it back. Good Luck

I'm sorry that you're having so much trouble getting the protein drinks in. I'm still 20 days pre-op, but I sort of like the Isopure Zero-Carb Liquid Portein that comes in individual glass bottles. It's more like Kool Aid, totally clear. I like blue raspberry best. I believe that it has 40g of protein.
