Question:
I heard that the more you have by-passed the less likely to dump

I had 150cm by-passed and unfortunately rarely dump no matter what I eat. Anyone know if this is true?    — Gail O. (posted on January 12, 2004)

I have never heard that theory. However, I had 180cm bypassed and I haven't "dumped" yet. In your post you said "unfortunately rarely dump"...I don't necessarily see that as a bad thing. : ) I am 5 months post op (as of yesterday) and down 90 pounds. I'm not the quickest loser, but I am consistent from week to week.

I can eat sugar and greasey foods. I feel that is a bad thing. I am sure I could eat a whole candy bar if I wanted, that isn't good. I fear I may slip into my old bad habits some day.

Not me! I had 150cm bypassed and all I have to do is look at a piece of bread and I dump! And, unfortunately, I mean the almost completely pass out kind of dumping. I do think it has gotten some better at almost 1 year post-op, but I have had to be very careful from the time I discovered it at 3-4 days post op (on diluted 100% fruit juice). Of course, I am kind of glad it worked that way...it's easier to stay on track that way.

NOT ME EITHER! My surgeon says the contrary. I had 75cm bypassed in October and have not dumped yet! Kim

From my understanding, the more you have bypassed the more likely to dump. As explained by my surgeon: When you eat a small amount of sugar it is hitting your intesines further down the line now, undigested, undiluted. Therefore you body is 'tricked' into thinking that cookie you just ate was the whole bag of cookies. When you eat sugar your body sends fluid and insulin to your intestines to digest this sugar. Because it thinks you ate the whole bag, it sends too much.

I had a distal bypass (150cm) and I have never dumped and I'm 10 months out. I don't think the two are connected from the stats I've read. Vicki 260/150 Just had lower body lift 13 days ago!

Gail, I had 150 cm bypassed and I dump very easily even now, over two years post-op. I really don't think the amount of intestines bypassed has any factor on whether the person has dumping syndrome or not.

While some people just don't dump, I *think* it's more likely that the longer your bypass, the higher the possibility. Prolly also related to how well you handled sugar before surgery. <p> I had about 15' bypassed - I have 60" left. And I dump like crazy, but then I wasn't handling sugars well before I gave up most of my gut, either.
