Question:
Im wondering how much pain there is from a Lap RNY?

I am having a Lap RNY this Friday!!! Several years ago I had my gall bladder removed laproscopically and I had a very quick recovery, hardly any pain at all. I know the two surgeries are very different but I am wondering what type of pain I can expect from my Lap RNY. Since the incisions are so small is it more internal pain you feel? Would love to hear from other Lap RNY post-op's.    — Elizabeth C. (posted on July 23, 2001)

There is allot more pain with Lap RNY.......I had it on April 9th 2001....I was in pain a good month, espically on the left side, where most of the work was done. It was by no means a picnic!

I had Lap RNY on a Monday, was home Tuesday, and off all pain meds by Wednesday. I had a JP drain in that occasionally caused some discomfort but I took Tylenol. My pain was MINIMAL - I've had an appendectomy and 3 C-Sections. This was a breeze compared to what those surgeries took out of me! I didn't even request any pain medication until about 4 hours after I woke up from my surgery - and then it was only because my back was hurting from being on the OR table for 2 1/2 hours... even the nursing staff was amazed. Good luck!

Each patient's tolerance to pain and the overall effects of a major surgery differ, but compared to my 2 C-sections, abdominal hysterectomy and "traditional" gallbladder, my lap RNY was truly a "walk in the park". There are now four of us in my family who have had lap RNY surgery. Each of us had an uncomplicated 2 day hospitalization, four hour drive home, and were back to work full-time within 8-14 days. My immediate post-op pain was felt deep inside and across the mid-back (strangely enough)....the rest of my family didn't experience that peculiar back pain at all. The actual incision sites were hardly uncomfortable, and were covered with Steri-strips (small strips of tape)...no external sutures, staples, or drains. We needed no pain medication past the fourth post-op day. I would certainly wish the same good fortune for you :-)

My Lap RNY was much less painful than my hysterectomy and the laparotomy I had for a bowel obstruction. Besides, for the first two days, the morphine was great for any soreness. A minor complication I had afterward (the JP drain was jostled out of place) was MUCH more painful than the surgery itself. But remember, everyone is different.
