My surgeon said he has been doing this for 30 years, although it has progressed to it's present form.

My surgeon has been doing it since mid-1970s. He is a founding member of the National Bariatric Society. Many, many changes have been made over the years so it has evolved and continues to evolve with better and better results and less and less complications.
