Question:
so worried about pouch...

I had an afternoon from "well, you know where" (I'm six weeks out and doing well with wt lose-ryn). This afternoon I went to lunch with my family at Texas Steakhouse. I ordered water (waitstaff just can't seem to take "nothing to drink, thank you" as though you are sure you want nothing) and steamed veggies broccoli and carrots, anyhow, I also picked had my husband fork over a hunk of chicken from his grilled chicken sandwich. All was fine with all of this. I get home and I'm in a funk, I found a tiny tine with "danish cookies" in it... I ate l think 4 of them, then drank a little crystal light thinking it would help was them down. I am so worried that I have ruined my pouch, is it possible to ruin your pouch with one episode of poor choices? ...and yes, my stomach feels "icky" I wish I could just barf-it up and be done but I can't even do that right. Nothing will come up. I am so worried that I've totally screwed up my surgery. Anyone have and reassurances or kicks in the butt for me? All are welcome. Getting back on the right track, ASAP=now!! Sorry about your episode. This eating thing is trial and error. I don't think you have ruined your pouch. I do think that you have learned a very valuable lesson. Mainly, cookies are bad and then you drank right after them. Which sent them into your intestines too fast and it is causing some discomfort. Try and learn quickly. I also know what you mean about the waitstaff looking at you funny when you tell them "nothing to drink", so I just order water also. Good luck.

Hello, Cookies are pretty soft and I do not see how they could possibly harm you. So--pick yourself up and take a deep breathe , forgive yourself and start again. Everyone 'messes up'--the only danger is when you punish yourself with more bad choices. Increase your fluids and have some nice soft protein for dinner. Christine

Confession is good for the soul and experience (particularly bad experience) is the best teacher. Your message shows a great understanding of your mistake, so you are obvioulsy on your way to being more aware of how you are feeling, how your emotions might motivate you to make some less-than-stellar choices and the consequences of those choices. Use the experience to stay motivitated and appreciate that, like the rest of us, you are human. And do try to appreciate how hard you've worked and all the success you've already had. And, by the way, it would be tough to imagine anyone damaging their pouch from a fork of chicken and a few cookies.

Just thank the Lord you didn't get dumping syndrom! I am 3 weeks out and ate 5-6 bites of tomato soup and dumped. I thought I was dying and wished I could. It was one of the worst experiences I've ever had. Be careful with sugar. Paying the consquences isn't worth it. I loved the lady who says "Nothing tastes as good as being thin feels!" C. Garber

I hope you don't think that you are the only one who has ever eaten something they know they shouldn't have. We have all eaten the "wrong thing" at one time or another and if anyone tells you otherwise they are full of something else. Don't beat yourself up over this. Just learn from it and go from there. As for the next time you feel you have something stuck in your pouch that won't come out or go through------go to the health food aisle in your local grocery or discount store and pick up a bottle of Papaya tablets. The natural enzyme in papaya helps food digest faster and when something feels like it is stuck or needs to come "up" and nothing happens---chew up a few of these tablets and it will be better in no time. I always have them with me just for that reason. I had an episode like yours where it felt like I was having some sort of appendecitis attack or something because some food was stuck and would not go through my pouch. I got these and all was well. Try them. I think you will be happy. GOOD LUCK TO YOU AND HAPPY LOSING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jordi, you need to breathe girl, you are just fine. Life is a bunch of up and down choices. We hope to always make the right ones, but when we make the wrong ones, hopefully the consequences will send us back to where we need to be. When you ate the things you did at the restaurant, I think you didn't do anything wrong, you had protein and vegetables, although broccoli is a hard vege to digest, so be careful with that one. Carrots can be too, but broccoli is worse. The 4 cookies you shouldn't have eaten, but I know the cookies you speak of, and well, yum is all I can say. Anyway, having sympathized with you, when you drank the fluid, the cookies swelled in your stomach/pouch and your pouch just didn't appreciate you at all at that point. That is the bad news, the muscle stretched a little too far. The good news is that it should pass in a few hours after the episode, and you probably did no permanent damage to your pouch. Your pouch will naturally stretch, most of them do (I can say all, but probably all do). It is a natural progression for it to stretch some. Don't fear this, but also don't help it! If you eat something that is a bread or starch, be very careful to not drink, that fluid will cause the bread or starch to swell and all of a sudden 1/4 cup of food becomes 1/2 or 3/4 cups of food and it hurts. I found this out with cream of wheat the hard way. Lesson learned, take a breath, and be careful today. One day at a time, just one day at a time. Take care. Patricia P.
