Question:
Collar bone and shoulder pain - anyone else experiencing it?

2 months post op, when I lie down my shoulder and collar bone feel very sore, both sides. It's almost like the lubrication is gone out of the joints. Ive lost 55 lbs so far, I just wonder if its my joints being able to come together after being pushed apart from all that fat? I know what gas pain feels like, that's long gone already.    — Ed W. Do you still have your gall bladder? If the pain is on the right, that is a classic symptom (shoulder pain), and it is often referred to as "a reference pain." Whether you still have the gall bladder or not, contact your surgeon regarding either circumstance. Good luck, Kris

They took out my gallbladder as part of my bypass surgery. It only hurts when I lie down on either side. If I roll over on my back, no pain. I go to the doc today, I'll ask there too. Thanks!

I am not sure about shoulder pain, but my husband and I both have had the surgery (I lost 216 pounds total--and he is still losing, has lost 170 already at about 10 months out), and we get pains in odd places. Like I can not hardly sit on my tailbone because there is NO cushion on it, and it is hard for me to lay certain positions. And he has pains in his arms & legs sometimes!! Weird!! I don't think there is a medical explanation, I just think it is because we lost cushioning from our FAT!! I miss the old fat pad sometimes!! (NOT!!)

As I lose weight, I have pain in variou parts of my body. As your weight shifts, it stresses the muscles and joints differently, in directions they are not used to, so your pain is probably normal. To be sure, ask your doctor at your next visit. the pain usually goes away as your body adjusts.

Excesses fat doesn't cause your joints to be pushed apart... if anything, it pushes them together, particuarly weight bearing joints, because they must support our body weight--think about knees and the pain/arthritis that many of us suffer. However, as other posters said, I think its very likely that your shoulder/collar bone pain is likely to be related to weigt loss. As our weight changes, we move differently and you could be doing something unconsciously that is causing soreness. You might get some relief from using ice or heat and/or some tylenol (assuming you're allowed to take it). If the pain continues, it'd probably be a good idea to check with your doc.

I had surgery three years ago and found out that the food was going back into my stomach. Suffered with terrible heartburn. Had repair surgery June 29,2006 and could not bounce back. Constantly nauseaus and pain in my shoulders, upper back, and collarbone. When he did the surgery he made the hole to small. Had an endoscopy and the problem was solved and fixed. Tell your doctor!!!!!

Debbie I think your answer comes the closest to the one the doctor gave me. My body is used to being stretched like a rubber band pulling on my joints and now that the weight is waning my body parts mesh together differently. Some chewable tylenol before going to bed took care of it. Thanks!
