Question:

I am 2wks post-op gastric sleeve. I have horrible heartburn/indigestion. A burning sensations when I drink liquids. Even after I haven't had anything for a while. It does not do it when I have soups or jello. Am I doing something wrong???    — Stephanie0279 (posted on October 8, 2007)

Stephanie, Did your surgeon give you something like Prilosec or Pepcid to take each day? If not, you could ask for an RX or you could try an OTC version of med. One of the things that seems a little wierd is that you need to have some calories going in probably about once an hour right now. Not a whole lot - just little sips of stuff - try to get in some heartier calories - soup broths, yogurt drink, stuff like that. Warm often is helpful. Staying hydrated is paramount. We sometimes tell patients that the heartburn/nausea feeling is your new hungry sensation when you're a baby post-op. It takes a while to figure out that food is fuel, and when you have so little fuel going in at a time, you've got to fuel up more frequently. We've got a whole bunch of Lap SG post-ops in the support group that I lead - in fact, we have one in our house! :) So I know exactly what you're talking about and definitely send hugs your way. It's a big thing relearning how to do this whole eating thing - taking small bites (a regular spoon full is the most you should have at one time), waiting 2 to 5 minutes between bites, and getting a little something in at bare minimum every 2 hours are a whole new way of life. It gets easier, better, and you're going to be thrilled as you find the great successes that are headed your way! Blessings, dina

I have a burning sensation as soon as liquid hit bottom too. Nothing else does it. Makes keeping hydrated a challange. I find warm liquid is much better, but not as refreshing. Try warming your liquids. I had RNY Tuesday the 2nd., so about a week behind you.

HI... I'm two weeks post-op as well. Congrats on being one of the losers! My doctor gave me a prescription for Nexium. I was told to take it daily for 2 months. So I would say that what you are feeling is common. Hang in there, Susan =0)
