Question:
I ate too fast and too much - 5 days after Gastric Band - I feel awful!

I had Gastric Band surgery 5 days ago and have been doing great. Up and walking (and driving) within 3 days and little pain medication. Today I started a new job and went too long without eating and was starving by the end of the day. I drank a bowl of soup (inhaled it) too fast and then ate some lox. I know I did not chew enough and now am feeling so nauseus and burping up a lot. I have a stomach ache and don't want to throw up. Should I drink water, go for a walk? I don't have any anti-nauseau medicine. Any advice? I will never do this again, even if I'm starving. Thank you!    — contentmom6 (posted on October 1, 2007)

i know your scared. When something gets stuck sometimes the only thing you can do is "pop" (lap band version of vomit) it will clear the stuck food. Your told about this pre op and told you should not do this often which is true. But sometimes it is the only solution. The first time I did it, I was terrified but it really was not a big deal didnt hurt, really wasn't unpleasant at all and I felt better immediately. It is your bodies natural defense to stuck material to produce mucus so you will probably pop a bunch of it and your nose will run. It is normal. But always remember to chew chew chew!!! Hope this helps, good luck.

NOT A GOOD IDEA TO BE THROWING UP AND JUST GOT YOUR BAND!...I WAS ADVISED TO TAKE IT SLOW, DON'T DRINK IF U FEEL NAUSEUS, JUST RELAX AND LET IT SETTLE. TOMORROW BE KIND TO YOUR HEALING TUMMY!

(oops, I clicked submit too soon on my last entry)....You still had major surgery and need to take it easy on yourself. Do your best to avoid this type of eating. Drink lots of water and bring protein snacks to work. I nibble on beef jerky and nuts throughout the day.

I don't think you should be eating lox so soon after surgery. Your stomach is still healing - you should probably be on a soft diet now. Didn't your doctor give you any instructions? You aren't really ready for much chewing now.

Deb, the answer is meat tenderizer and warm water. 1 tsp in about 6 oz water. It will tase very salty, but will disloge anything that's stuck. It works for many of us. Doctor reccomended.

Sorry you feel so bad because I know exactly how you feel. I am a month & a half out and occasionally 'forget' to slow down and chew, chew, chew. I also am learning how to tell EXACTLY when another bite is one too many bites. I don't care how good that one last, tiny, little bite of food may look, if I eat it, I will get that nasty feeling or the 'foamies' (YUK) and have that horrible lump in my throat. My doctor told me throwing up is not to be taken lightly - Don't do it! In other words - think before I scarf my food down too fast or don't chew it well. Eating too fast can cause very chewed-up food to stack up infront of the tiny opening. Too many bites will plug the opening, not letting anything through. The exciting thing about this is I always wanted to know when to quit eating. Portion Control was my enemy!!!!! I was never a closet eater, binger, emotional eater, etc. - I love the taste of food and if it tasted good, I would eat it until I was miserable. With this surgery, eating like this just isn't an option unless you want to feel as you described. I am amazed at how easy my new eating habits are evolving every day as I attempt to try new foods. Most of the things I enjoy eating, are being added each day. I enjoy my guilt-free, new portion controlled way of eating. It's like a new freedom to eat, knowing my WLS built-in mechanism will tell me to STOP when I need to. THIS NEVER HAPPENED ON ANY OF MY PRIOR DIETS. IF I FELL OFF OF THE WAGON, IT WAS THE PORTIONS THAT DESTROYED ANY SUCCESS I MIGHT HAVE MADE. Good Bye diets - Hello Control! Well, please don't despair - What you are feeling will pass and you can start again. If you need to throw up - do it. Just don't let that become a crutch to you.

Hi, I am 2 weeks out today. I know I startted soft foods too early, but I was hungry. I don't feel up real fast. and think I can probally eat more than I should. Like a can of soup. But there are things like meat products no matter how much I chew it hurts going down. And sometimes it gets stuck and that really hurts. I almost threw up one day, but drank water to get it down. Also, I have the problem of sipping just a little water while I eat. not suppose to, but I have a dry mouth all the time from meds I'm on. I can't stand that. Am I eating too much? I wonder. I go to the Doctor on the 11th. Had surgery on the 18th of Sept. Not really losing much weight. very slow. I've went from 242 to 246-238. varies. I think alot of it maybe water gain from the sodium in everything.. any suggestions on this would be helpful.. [email protected]
