Question:
I am three years out with RNY. In the past 8 months I have gained back 20 pounds of

the 180 pounds that I lost. I have truly not eaten one morsel of food that is not allowed. No ice cream, butter, bread, pasta. I gave up almonds which I ate a lot of because of the calorie content. I eat approximately 1000 calories a day, get my protein vitamins, water. I am scared out of my mind with this weight gain. I do not exercise a lot (I am having both of my knees replaced this summer so that will change). Is it normal to gain back some weight? Do I reduce the amount I eat even more? Thank you for your input.    — MVitale (posted on May 13, 2009)

You really should consult the doctor and nutritionist from the office that performed your RNY. Getting advice from people here concerning cutting back more food etc, could be dangerous to your health. I wish you the best and I hope you find your answers. Good luck!

I agree that you should talk with your surgeon and nutritionist since you are very compliant with your diet, tracking your cal intake, protein, vitamins and water. My opinion is that the key will be the exercise. With the knee replacements this summer it is still going to be a while before you can do much weight bearing exercise. Does your surgeon's office have an exercise physiologist? Do you have access to a pool for water aerobics? You have done an awesome job losing your weight, contact your surgeon, nutritionist, exercise physiologist to see what can be done to stabilize your weight safely. Kevin

There is a normal 10% gain back...I gained back 8 of the 158 I lost at about year 2...Then I stayed right there for the last 3 years after...(I did have a 10 lb gain which was TOTALLY my own serious malfuntion!) I went on to lose that last year and have been back on track since...I did notice though that I had some weight fluctuations and went in for labs and found I was hypothyroid after not needing meds for 5 years! I got back on thy meds and even lost a few pounds after about a month on the meds! So you might go in for labs if it's been a while...My other weight gain was while I was anemic and with seveal vitamin deficiencies! (I was also on a month long eating binge) So either way, you might just go in and get labs and talk to the doc! Good luck! You've done fantastic and a 20 lbs gain is not unusual at all!

main things 1 get blood work run 2 don't under eat. If your body is starved it will slow your metabolism. check with a dietian to see waht changes they recommend. It may be as simple as the time of day you eat. Since you are restricted in lower body strenght with the knee problems, do upper body exercises to burn calories. You cna find some good ones on WEBMD

Are you also paying attention to what kind of fluids you are drinking? Obviously soda is bad for you but Juice, Sweet Tea, and alcoholic beverages are bad for you as well. These calories add up quickly.
