Question:
Drinking water hurts....(1 week post-op) any one else have this problem?

It is as if the moment I drink water all of this gas starts up. I can't pass the gas and it often hurts so much that I have to hold on to something. HOWEVER, I can eat everything on my list of stage 3 foods and drink milk just fine. It's like I'm scared to drink water, but I know I have to so I end up forcing myself. Should I be worried? Has anyone else experienced this?...Thank you in advanced =). -Jessica-    — Jessica07 (posted on December 24, 2007)

Yes, I have a pain in my throat about 4" down and I can't burp after I take water. It will hurt up to 1/2 hour. I have tried warn, and cold but have the same problem. My doctor told me to take liquids and count them toward the water, so if mike works for you, you are getting protein with the milk which is great. I find I can make Cream of tomato soup with water and milk and get it down without the lump. Just focus on any liquid that makes your daily quota. Call your doctor if you are in doubt.

I have no idea why but at 5 mos. out water is still uncomfortable (and tastes terrible) and crystal lite goes down just fine. Also I do better when any liquid is at 'tap' temperature.

I had horrible gas in the beginning too, and water was hard to drink. I now drink chamomile tea and crystal light and can do all my fluids with no problem. I can't drink cold drinks though. My pouch likes warm better. The gas got better around week 6. Whatever you do, make sure you're getting your fluids. I wound up back in the ER three days after coming home with dehydration. ~Shirley

Hello, You are new to this and so is your new tummy. It will probably take another week or so for the adjustments to be made. It'll work out. Make sure you call your doctor. I am still hungry and I am 6 1/2 years post-op. I need money to have the lap band surgery over my gastric bypass. I can't lose any more weight and am gaining it. I can't do it without the surgery. Please help find a way for me? If I can win the lottery, that would help. Merry Christmas. Pam

Hi Jessica, welcome to the losing side! The problem you have is pretty common and I think quite a mystery. You just have to keep playing with it. I am almost 4 years out and water is always an issue for me. I drink most everything else fine, but water is still an issue for me. It just does not go down the same as other fluids. I would sip slow (I am sure you are), and try warm, hot and cold at different times. I like warm decaf tea with lemon, that goes down really good for me, but I still have problems getting it all in. I hope you find your nitch, but don't worry, it is common, you just have to keep working at it to find what works for you. I don't think something is "wrong", but I would run it by your surgeon and ask them for suggestions. If you get a good one, be sure and share it with the group! Take care. Patricia P.

Hi Something I learned after have my 2 c-sections was to lay on your left side as this will move things out of the way so to speak so that you can pass the gas. It works everytime, beleive me I have told this to many people and they are like you are crazy then I get the call that it works. Also I have been told to make sure you take little sips at a time and not to like gulp the water down. I am in pre surgery mode so I am practicing everything in the book that my DR. gives to all of his patients. Linda G
