Question:
Continuing awful taste in mouth and nausea

Has anyone experenced awful taste in mouth and nausea? I cannot keep anything down except liquids and cannot get rid of the awful taste in my mouth. I throw up in the mornings and have pain in my stomach. I have not had any vitamins or protien for over three weeks. How long is this suppose to last? My surgery was over 7 weeks ago.    — ljezso13 (posted on January 17, 2007)

The taste in your mouth may be from "ketosis". I have this weird taste sometimes too. I would call my doctor about the throwing up and the pain in your stomach. They will really want to know that you have not been taking your protein also. Good luck!

HI, I agree with the last post that the taste you have is most likely due to ketosis, sometimes called bariatric breath.. I had it too at the beginning, but it does go away, I bought some of those sugar free breath strips at Walgreens, they helped. As far as the nausea, you need to let you doc know about that, there may be an underlying issue.. and you definietly NEED to get your proteins in and your vitamins, or you will start feeling worse than you do now. It will get better as time passes. Good luck!! April

I had my surgery 1 year ago and for the first few weeks I had a bad taste in my mouth from having to drink all of the liquids with the substitute sweetners, I coldn't drink water because it hurt my stomach. As far as the nausea ,My doctor told me that sometimes the nausea comes from the sinuses draining ,and you swallowing what has drained into stomach. He advised me to try taking something for sinus and if that didn't work he said that he would give me something to help with the nausea. I hope this helps and you feel better.

Hi Lewis, If you're only keeping down liquids, vomitting and havnig pain you need to be seen immediately. You could have a stricture. A friend of mine went several weeks with symptoms and didn't get it checked. By the time she saw the doc she was severely malnourished and dehydrated. Please see your surgeon right away. And what helps me with the bad breath are Listerine breath strips. :o) I keep them in my pocket at all times! Take care.

I suggest you check with your surgeon to make sure. Haven't you had any post-surgery follow-up visits? Have you mentioned it to him/her? I felt as you do. I just took it slowly - sipped at my protein drink (yes, they taste awful!) and waited an hour after finisheing my protein drink before having water. I also had to wait an hour in between eating anything and drinking anything. I felt sick and threw up frequently. It takes time for your system to heal. You do need to make sure you get your protein and vitamins in, or you will really have troubles.

Hi Lewis, I think that it is past time to call your surgeon. It is sounding like you have some problems that layment, such as us can't help you with. I would call and get in ASAP. If you have Nausea all the time, it is not giving your pouch a chance to heal. Don't listien to stories from other people, call your DR>
