Kari- firts things first- be sure to drink your fluid- this is most important as well as getting exercise. Now for the fiber part- have you heard of Nikken products? I use several of their products but for your concern there are two I use- first is their perfect start meal replacement powder- you can mix it in water or nonfat milk- it is vanilla flavored so you can add a piece of fruit or flavoring for other flavors- Each serving is 130 calories and 20 g protein and 5 g sugars. I add to this Nikkens FiberPlus supplement - it has 5 g of dietary fiber but no psyllium which is what causes gas -I had my surgery in April and still have difficulty taking in enough fiber naturally from food. If you want more information on Nikken email me at home. Donna - [email protected]

A lot of people use Benefiber (and I am one of them!), but it has SOLUABLE FIBER ... This helps with cholesterol and blood sugar, NOT constipation. You need insoluable fiber for your bowels. Check the labels! Some high fiber foods are Kashi cereal, beans ... Take a Gas-X pill or Beano before eating high-fiber foods.

Kari, I found myself in the same boat last summer. I had been experiencing discomfort off and on for a few months, but it always went away. Then last summer the pain became much worse and wouldn't go away. I couldn't sit, stand, or walk, and going to the bathroom was TERRIBLE! I stayed in bed for a week. I was finally diagnosed with an anal fissure and was scheduled for surgery (lateral internal sphincterotomy) that was to take place three days later. However, the night before surgery I ended up with a fully thrombosed hemmorhoid, as well. You see, the exam to find the fissure was so painful and traumatic to that area that it caused the hemmorhoid. So, the next day I underwent a hemmorhoidectomy in addition to the originally planned procedure. It took about two weeks for me to feel normal again, and yes, bowel movements were downright excruciating for the first few days...but it got better, and I haven't had trouble since. I take special care not to put myself in that position again by making sure I drink at least 60 oz. of fluid per day. That is the key for me...fluid intake. I also mix Kashi GoLean cereal into my yogurt, eat popcorn occasionally (with my nutritionist's blessing), try to eat a few veggies, and when I need additional help, I take a prescription fiber powder called Glycolax. It is flavorless and mixes clear. I can even put it in my drinking water and I don't even know it's there. I often put it in the first bottle of water I drink during the day. I used to take it daily, but now I only take it on occasion. But drink your water. That is the most important thing. Good luck, Kari...it WILL get better.

BeneFiber and FiberSure have SOLUABLE FIBER, which is dissolved into the blood stream and helps with cholesterol and blood glucose levels; you need INSOLUABLE FIBER to help your intestines. Eat foods high in whole grains (Kashi cereal) and beans. If gas is a problem, take Gas-X.
