Question:
How long after open RNY was it before you could wear a bra comfortably?

I am scheduled for 6/27/03, and I remember reading that most women were unable to wear a bra when they went home from the hospital. I am just wondering how long it took others to feel comfortable wearing one again. Thanks!    — DebT (posted on June 4, 2003)

It took me a few days before I would wear a bra, but only if I was going out somewhere because wearing it too long started to cause addominal pain, but after the first week I could wear it w/out any problems whatsoever.

Took me about six months, but that's cause I was too fat to fit any of my bras :>) Realistically I could have worn one about 2 or 3 weeks out comfortably.

This was my first day wearing a bra since my surgery a week ago and it definately was uncomfortable. Thought it was my binder at first, but over-the-shoulder-boulder-holder it was. I found some tank tops with the bra insert at Wal-Mart's Plus-size section and they feel like you have nothing on at all. You may want to try one (approx. $6).

It will depend on how high your incision is. My surgeon had said mine would start at my breastbone, but it ended up about 3 inches lower so my bra didn't bother it at all. I'm also not that large in the chest so I still went without a bra unless I had to go out in public. As for tank tops...someone suggested getting mens tank t-shirts.

I wore my bra after about 2 weeks, after open RYN, didn't have any problem, could have easily worn it right from the hospital, but I wanted to be "Free", I had to wear the tummy binder so that was enough en-trapment for me......

I had my surgery lap and I had on a bra the day after my surgery. Just take a comfortable one with you. Check my profile for more tips. I tried to keep a good diary of my first year post op.

I never even thought about that one, but I did not wear my bra for about 3 weeks post-op b/c it rubbed on the tip of my incision. I just let my binder hold them up and now they are so small they could just lay there and no one would ever notice LOL. Good luck:o)

I started wearing mine 1 week post op. I kept my staples in for 3 weeks, and coudn't go that long. I'm a 42 DD. I used light gauze against the incision, and tucked a washcloth under my bra to give a little padding. out 6 weeks, down 34#

Hi...I took two of myt most comfortable bras and cut a V-shaped notch out of the elastic band between the cups. At first I felt like it was bad to 'destroy' a perfectly good bra, but then my DH pointed out that I'd be needing a smaller size soon enough. So notch away!

I am 6 weeks post op. I wear a 46DD. It felt like it was choking me, after surgery. So, I started wearing a sports bra. The support is not there. However, you don't feel 'naked'. The sports bra hasn't bothered me at all. I, also, bought some of the tanks with the built in bras. I enjoy wearing them, too! Also, when I am home, I don't even bother with a bra!

hi debbie, congrats on your up coming surgery! truthfully i'm a big baby so take this for what it's worth...i was a 48DD and i didn't where a bra home from the hospital. i stayed home a lot but when i did venture out in public i wore a dress with a light jacket on top, my way of thinking i'm hiding myself for about a month. i normally try to take good care of how i look but i felt so bad i didn't care. i didn't have a binder either. best of luck to you, kimberly open distal rny 11/12/02 -95lbs

I wore a bra home from the hospital and everyday since. I bought the front closing type and left the bottom two hooks undone and tucked under. This was very comfortable and didn't damage the bra by making any cut in the front. It took a few weeks before I could hook all the hooks because my insision was just under the bandline.

I got a "zip tie" from my husband garage and cinched in the center of my bra- made it comfortable- I was open RNY and my scar go way up!

You should be able to wear one home from the hospital. Take a piece of ribbon or yarn and tie it around the center of the bra and cinch it as tight as you can. It will bring the bra way up off the incision line and won't cause any problems. Good luck!
