Question:
Concerned about how much I can hold 8 days out

I am eight days out and I can eat 4oz of applesause? Why, shouldn't that be too much? Gosh, hate to start this eating too much stuff so soon. I can eat jello in about 4oz and endless popscicles. So what is up with that, thought I should only hold 1-2 oz at this stage. I have no feeling of being uncomfortable with these amounts.    — R T. (posted on February 14, 2004)

Did you have an RNY? MOST people will tell you there is nothing to worry about... that what you are eating is 'liquid' and you will be able to 'eat' more. ME - I will say 'watch' I was 'just' like you; at least with the Jello, I didnt try applesauce. Came home at the jello and freaked! WHAT your surgeon probablly DIDNT tell you pre op is there is a 'small' percentage of people whose stoma's (the opening he made) doesnt shrink.... if that happens you will NEVER have the food limiation you thought you were going to have post.... You'll be able to 'tell' a bit later when you go on to solids; if you think this might be a problem, PLEASE have your doctor order an Upper GI test, this 'condition' is basically the opposite of stricture (people who get stricture the opening tigtens up too much and has to be opened). If you get a stoma that fails to close you basically are left with the RNY malabsorption so if you diet you will 'loose weight' BUT you have to watch your portion cause your pouch will be 'non functional'. This can be corrected.... Im not telling you this to doom you, just to let you know what 'could' be happening NOT that it is happening. Its sad that surgeons DO NOT tell their patients it can happen and when it does it recks havoc to that person.

I am 9 months out and I can eat about the same amount of jello, applesauce..., but when you start eating dencer foods you will notice the differance, jello melts in your tummy and the applesauce just slides on through, dont worry. When you begin to et pureed checken salad, hamsalad, cottagecheese smoothies, cheese stix, and then when you get to meats fish, chicken, steak...about 3 or 4 small bites is all I can handle, and I feel full, and I dont feel I could eat another bite, so I dont. I worried about this early too, but, this was my experiance:0) Good luck enjoy the ride open RNY 4/24/03>100#

I am four months post-op and for the first 3 months I could not feel when I was full til I drank my water 30 mintues later. but at 3 months out I could fell when I was full on 2 oz of food. Strange but I think the pouch needed time to heal. Good Luck Donna

Hi... Everyone is different as far as tolerance to volume. I hear a lot of people that are never full, but I also hear of naby who are never hungry. Initially...the first couple of days, I could eat whole popcicles and drink the shakes with no problem. Then, there were days I was full a couple bites into a popcicle and it took me forever to drink one shake, so it will vary from day to day

Your stomach hasn't healed yet. You won't get that full sensation for sometime yet. Not sure how long it takes. I think it was about 1 month out before I did. You will need to make sure to measure your foods to ensure you don't stretch your "new tool". You will notice the denser the foods the fuller you will feel and the longer you will stay full. Example Once you can eat chicken breast a 2 oz chicken breast will last longer than 6 oz of salad. Remember this when you can eat protein. Always eat protein first. Protein will also speed up your metabolism and help you keep from losing muscle. Don't forget your water. If you haven't started a journal--do it. I am 14 months out. I didn't take pictures or keep a journal. Wished I had. Get ready for the best years of life. The next few weeks will be tough, but hang in there. It will be worth it.

Hi, I am 13 days out of surgery and I have been eating everything in site. Well nearly anyway. I was OK in the hospital but man the minute I got home No Jello or Popcicle in the world could fill me up. I asked my doctor about Hot and Sour Soup and he said OK, but to count my ounces. I am only suppose to eat 2 ounces per meal, 5 to 6 times a day. Well, I am eating, like you, 4 to 5 ounces 3 to 4 times a day. Haven't mentioned it to my surgeon yet, I see him on Thursday but, I am glad to know that I am not the only one with a wandering appetite.
