Question:
Hair loss problems!!

I was wondering if anyone out there is using the Nioxin products for hair loss? I am starting to loose my hair by the tons and am going to start using this shampoo in the morning. I just wanted to know what people think of it and the results they have with it? If it's not good what people have found that works good the stop the hair loss at least somewhat? Also if anyone out there who has lost some of their hair and experienced their head somewhat itching and feeling funny? Thanks so much!    — Amy E. (posted on November 28, 2001)

Hi Amy, I experienced hair loss months 2-8. I lost at least 40% of my hair. I did the nutrition and vitamins properly and know that nothing I could have done would have stopped my hair loss. However, while it was happening I felt desparate and needed to do SOMETHING. So, I used the nioxin products. I loved them! Didn't help my hair loss at all (well I guess I don't know that for sure..if I hadn't used them maybe I'd be bald!). I really loved the way they made my hair and scalp feel. My hair was very shiny and clean. So, while I don't advocate them for hair loss, I do think they are wonderful products for cleansing and conditioning. However, a little pricey to continue after the hair loss stopped. I, too had a funny feeling scalp when my hair loss was happening. My scalp HURT!! Whenever my hair moved, it felt like sharp needles were sticking my scalp. I mentioned this to every doctor (PCP, surgeon, gyn, dermatologist) and no one had an answer. It slowly decreased and disappeared along with the hair loss. My hair itself felt dead, as if it were no longer attached to my scalp. If your hair loss continues and you know that you are nutritionally sound, don't beat yourself up over it. Most times, it is either going to happen to someone post op or not. It's the luck of the draw I suppose. Best wishes. Shelley

My hairdresser told me the itching was actually a good thing. It means your hair is growing back in. After my surgery, my hair fell out and was really thin. She told me to use Nioxin also, but I went to Sally Beauty Supply and got Nutri-ox, which she said was about the same thing (just cheaper). I think it works great. My hair is getting thicker and I can tell a difference. She did say you had to be faithful and use it everyday. Also, she told me to take Biotin twice a day. I take two 800mcg. pills, once in the morning one at night. The pills are very small, so you don't have to worry about them getting stuck in your stoma.

Unfortunately, Amy, nothing will really stop the hair loss. I experienced hair loss month 3-6 after surgery and also while on medically supervised fasts. It seems to be the body's response to extreme calorie cutting and Doctor's say that nothing really will stop it if you are one of those people who are prone to it. Not everyone is, evidently. It seems the thicker your hair, the more likely you are to have hair loss. The good news is that it does come back in again, sometimes even thicker than before. I have even read here that some people with straight hair came back in curly or wavy. The best advice, I think, is to cut your hair short if you can, and just live with it thin for a little while. This phase passes very quickly and you will be so preoccupied with your new bod you will barely notice your hair.
