Question:
Am I taking all my vitamins and supplements?

Ok..I had Open RNY surgery on March 29th of this year. I got laid off and have no medical right now and thus no doctor to consult. I am hoping I am taking all my supplements and vitamins correctly. I would APPRECIATE any help. Here is my daily regimen: 3000 mgs of sublingual B-12 tabs..One each iron supplements(Foltrin and Chromagen) from a prescription from the doctor...Two a day of Calcium Citrate 800 mgs. total. One Multi-vitamin (Woman 50+) and I drink lots of water and eat protein bars and try to get 60 grams of protein per day..So am I ok? I have lost 90 lbs (from 256 to 164) and am in good health...Thanks    — Suzanne S. (posted on October 16, 2002)

sounds like you are doing well!! Congratulations. One question I have for you is how do you feel?? Are you tired all of the time?? Is your hair falling out?? IF the answers are no, then you are probably doing fine. IF you are having any problems, then you may want to place a call to your surgeon for suggestions. They will usually give you advice over the phone with out seeing you. If you are off work, you may want to apply for medical assistance so that you can get labs done at some point.Good Luck to you!!

Assuming your RNY is proximal, you're taking way more B12 than you probably need. 2 of the sublinguals per week should be plenty. Also, you should probably be taking at least 1500 mg. calcium citrate, as that's another one of the things we really malabsorb. Keep track of your labs and look for trends, anything rising or lowering, and adjust accordingly. Doctors will only look to see if your within normal ranges, so it's up to us to see if we're heading for trouble before it happens. Congrats on your weight loss, and good for you for being proactive in your health care.

I don't take B-12 pills, I take a shot every 3 months..Otherwise I take about the same as you except I also take prevacid every day..Sounds like you are doing great!! Keep up the good work...

Um, is that enough calcium? I don't remember the "rule". Do you need more or less after 50?

That isn't quite how I'd portion things out, myself. Sounds like a huge wad of B12, not enough calcium and no mention of iron, A, D, E or zinc? Also, which multi vite? Some are well formulated for a base, some are not. Are the other B's (1,2,3,6) covered?
