Question:
Compaired to a gallbladder attack how bad is the pain?

I have never had any kind of surgery before and I am scared to death! What kind of pain will I experience and where? Is it from the insiscion itself? Or does it come more from inside where they have re-routed you (so to speak). I have had several gall bladder attacks that were excruciating painfull. I would not wish that on my worst enemy. Will the pain from the surgery be like that?    — sue S. (posted on December 2, 2002)

I had my gallbladder removed at same time as WLS. The pain was no where near gallbladder attack. Good Luck. Christi

Had gall bladder removed laparoscopically in '95 and LAP-RNY on October 8, 2002. Post surgical discomfort the same. Four holes for gall bladder and five for LAP-RNY. Went back to work in one week, but you are not really back to yourself then. I was free of all pain around 2 weeks, but dont be discouraged. Best thing I ever did. Tomw will be 8 weeks and 50 lbs. Good luck to you!

I had open gallbladder in 91 and open RNY 2001. Open RNY was 10times easier than my gallbladder removal. I am now 17months post op and have lost 155lbs and at goal. I met my goal at 10months. Good Luck!! P.S. I did have gallbladder attacks and there is no comparison to the RNY surgery. The attacks I would never ever want again and if I had to do the RNY again, I would do it in a heartbeat..

I would say the most painful thing I ever experienced was my gall bladder attacks. I had mine out in the last 80[s lap, and open rny june of this year. The recovery for both for me was about the same. I will have to say that my inside where more tender after my rny, but nothing at all like gall bladder attack...

Hi there. I had my gall bladder taken out back in the late 80's - the old fashioned way....cut wide open (ouch!) The gallbladder attacks were so severe that I would hyperventilate from the intense pain. I lost 50 pounds because I couldn't keep food down for about 3 months. I HAVE NEVER EXPERIENCED PAIN LIKE THIS!!!!! The Lap RYN was not even in the same league as the gb attacks. The surgeries may have been similiar with soreness and stiffness but the attacks themselves were unbearable. I had my LAP surgery on Tuesday, Oct. 15th and was back to work the following Monday. With my gallbladder surgery I was out for 3 weeks. I'm not young (50 years old) but I think I have a positive attitude and I was so excited about this tool that I really looked forward to having the surgery and start living. Thanks for listening!!
