Question:
Has anyone had WLS coverage with AETNA HMO in Texas?

My employer is in the processing of switching to Aetna HMO and I am wondering if they will cover WLS? We have an option of going to Aetna PPO or Aetna POS if we pay the extra premium individually. Has anyone in the DFW area had a problem getting Aetna HMO to cover the surgery? You can respond here or email me directly at [email protected]. Thanks.    — Carrie S. (posted on February 1, 2001)

I had WLS on Dec 12 and it was with Aetna. My husband's job changed I changed insurance to Aetna HMO. They approved with no problems on 1st request. The paperwork took about 2 weeks. Then I switched to Blue Shield 2 weeks after surgery. They are paying for all followups. Good luck.

Consider yourself lucky that your company is going through the insurance change. Aetna no matter if its and HMO, PPO, or POS they all have the same policy regarding wls. They will approve as long as your bmi is over 40 w/o comorbities and a good diet history or bmi over 35 with comorbities and a diet history. I have several friends with Aetna and was apporved with no problems. Myself, I am in the middle of insurance approval. I should hear any day now <fingers crossed>. Good luck to you. -Tanya

I have Aetna HMO and was approved for WLS within two weeks. I live in Houston but I don't think it makes much difference which city you're in, it's the same company. Good luck! Stephanie Open RNY 12-21-00 -34 lbs
