Question:
How much calcium can we absorb at one time?

I have been told we can absorb 400mg of calcium citrate at one time. However, I do not know how anyone truly knows this. I sometimes take 2 pills at once which means I may be throwing away 200mg but it's better to hope I absorb more than 400mg than not get in all 4 pills, inmy opinion.

A doctor at a recent wellness seminar I attended said people can absorb about 500 mg of calcium at a time. I also recently read the same thing on a medical website. I suspect that 500 mg may be less for us RNYers because something around 3 to 6 feet of our intestines have been bypassed, and the part that is bypassed includes the preferred calcium receptor sites. Moral of the story: spread your calcium out throughout the day, and don't skip doses.
