Question:
How strict are his guidelines for WLS candidicy?

I have read the UC Davis web site concerning bariatric surgery guidelines, but I was wondering if those who have had surgery by Dr. Wolfe have had to actually have documented medical supervision (doctor supervised medication, nutritional studies, etc...) before he classified you as a candidate. After fighting this weight problem alone for so long, will I have to go through months or years of the same thing with the doctor watching me?    — avataris (posted on October 31, 2001)

Its not really UC Davis, but your insurance. Without medically supervised diets, most insurances will not approve.

I had a Lap on my 50th B-Day (7-16-01) performed by Dr. Nguyn at UCD. They recently lost a Dr.in Sept. and have since tightened their qualifications for surgery. As I understand it now you must have a medical problem such as Diabetes, etc. to qualify for the surgery. Even so, they are scheduling approx 5-6 mo from now. The wait is quite long. I also know the surgery is being performed at Sutter and the time frame is quite shorter. Please don't hesitate to let me know if you have any questions. I've been where you are and know what you are going through. It has been a rocky road - but I can now say it has been quite worth it. Good Luck!!
