Question:
What exercise helped you lose your weight faster??

I am 8 weeks post op and had been just walking til now ( Drs. Orders ). I have only lost 46 lbs so far which I think is too slow. I want to lose faster and in my pea brain I think exercise is the way. I don't eat much at all as I have no desire to eat, so I know thats not the reason for the slow weight loss. Can you help me?? I don't belong to a gym so if you have any "at home" ideas I would love to hear them. PS: I still have no angel and would LOVE one, any takers??? God Bless you all, Gina — Gina D. I bought a stationary bike @ Walmart for $90. It's just a garden variety type, no frills. I do that and alternate Richard Simons tapes 3-4 times a week so I don't get bored, and I'm in the AC ( here in Houston it's scortching hot!)I watch TV on the bike. I like to work out alone so this is good for me. You might want to get a friend to go to aerobics with or the gym or walking. It's all good as long as it's cardiovascular. Good Luck

hi there i too was down that at 8 weeks post op i felt the same way i guess i expected it to just fall off over night well im now down a little over 100 now and woohoo i feel great give it three months and youll be amazed i too did exercise bike at first and walked i now swim alot as the weather is so nice finally did you know that not eating enough can actually slow the weight loss process to believe it or not because your body panics and goes into starvation mode it wants to hang on for dear life i noticed that when i finally uped my caloric intake a bit i actually lost faster because it kept my metabolism higher also if you get a bit more hungry after exercise dont panic its completely normal its your body needing more fuel happy losing to you and you are doing great

I find that walking and yoga are the best. Just think you have lost more than 5 lbs per week!!!!! That is terific. That is real fast. In on year at that rate you'd lose 250lbs in one year!! And think how long it took to put on the weight. Your doing great. Keep up the good work.

Gina - 46 pounds in 8 weeks is not slow...I am not sure what your doctor told you, but mine said on average the weight loss in the 1st 2 months would be about 20 - 25 pounds and then it should drop to 10 - 15 pounds a month....You are right on schedule. I will be 8 weeks on Monday and as of this morning am down 41.5 pounds...I too wish it were more, but realize that is AMAZING...Before the surgery, last year when I lost 30 pounds it took me 12 weeks...Keep up the Great Work...

I would also like to point out that not eating much can make your loss slower. If you eat too few calories your body goes into starvation mode and holds onto the fat a little harder. Not suggesting you stuff yourself either, but also don't allow yourself to fall into the old - eat less, lose more mentality.

In addition to the great ideas I wanted to post a few more. Find ways to be more active in your everyday life. Park as far away as you can from the grocery store. Carry a shopping basket instead of pushing a cart. Garden instead of watching t.v. or sitting at the computer. Go to the park and play frisbee instead of going to the movies. Watch how active kids and fit people are and imitate them. We're on our way to being healthy, thin people. Start pretending you're already there.

Most of us forget that not only do we need to aerobic but also anaerobic such as weights. Even using 5 pound dumbells doing srm exercises and carrying them with help. If you build a pound of muscle it burns 9 calories vs 6 for a pound of fat. Not only will you tone up and get stronger you burn more calories. I suggest buying a few small weights and trying some different motions. Also i don't have cable in my house but on my pbs there are a few exercise shows that are good. The library is a good resource for finding books which contain stregth training exercises that are easy and effective. Im sure that there are sites on the net somewhere too. Good luck and happy losing!!!

I used to be a powerlifter and personal trainer for powerlifters (in my much lighter days) and having more muscle does increase your metabolism, but the best thing to do is an aerobic type of exercise. Any kind of aerobics with step being the most productive....any type of activity that gets your heart rate to rise to a safe excellerated beat and sustaining it for at least 20 minutes. Spinning is good and pretty popular right now. This is definately a better burner is done three days a week even compared with adding more muscle mass. Muscle will also give you a more sculpted appearance. I wouldn't knock either but aerobics will def burn more. Always talk to your Dr before you start any exercise plan to make sure it's safe for you.

I'm also 8 weeks out and it seems that my weight loss has come to an halt. I'm in a panic. I work out almost everyday. Walk two miles on the treadmill and every other day walk an additional two miles on the track with my kids. I know my eating has alot to do with this and I'm trying to eat more. I thinking about going to a nutritionalist to talk about my diet, but I need one that is experienced with gastric bypass patients.
