Question:
Will I be allowed to wear my own gown/night clothes while in the hospital?

My daughter and I had lap RNY surgery, and found that we really didn't care at all what we wore that first day...the hospital gown was just fine. On the next day, however, the IV was removed and we were instructed to take a shower and walk in the hall at least eight times that day. I'll admit that we thought our surgeon had lost his mind when he suggested that much activity on the day after surgery, but we felt like "new women" after the shower, and it was nice to have our own gowns/robes on as we inched our way down the hall :-) Seriously, most hospitals don't care one way or the other. I would suggest something that is very loose and that you don't have to struggle to put on. Some patients keep their IVs for several days, so gowns/robes with larger sleeves are convenient when trying to change clothes with IV tubings in place. Good luck!

If you have an IV, you won't get into a regular night gown without a nurse helping you. I just wore the hospital gown, then another one for a "robe" when I walked. I had an IV for most of my stay, so that worked best for me. I took my own comfy slippers to make me feel more comfortable. I didn't get an opportunity to shower until right before I was discharged. I was only in the hospital for 2 days tho.

I brought my own robe and slippers. but i was told not to bring pjs or anything. And once I was there, i couldn't of cared less. Between the tube that goes here and the iv that goes there, i thought it was best I had the hospital gown on anyway, so i don't mess up my clothes. But if you really would be more comfortable in your own clothes once you are there, I'm sure you can talk to them. They give you tons of blankets, too. I was very comfy when I was there, despite the pain! :) goodluck!

Yes, I was able to and I was grateful for it. I even brought a brand new one with me. It was as close to pampering myself while in the hospital as I could get. :) Good luck to you!

Nancy, I was allowed to wear mine, unfortunately, the drainage seeping out from around my drain hole got them soaked the first day. I was actually thankful for the hospital gowns for that reason. I just made sure I had one on the front and one for a housecoat in back. Best of Luck.

The day of my surgery and the day after, I wore the hospital gowns. After that I wore my own and was so much more comfortable. I loved my silky, nylon gowns - the cotton hospital gowns are so rough. I took a shower every morning (including the morning after surgery) and it felt so good to put my nice gowns on. I also took a very loose, full long robe that I was able to put one arm in and throw over the other shoulder for walking the halls. Open RNY 11/29/01 -128 pounds

Sure you can, however, I ended up staying in the hospital gowns the whole time....they were comfortable and if they got messed up, no problem. When I went for walks I put on another one backwards so that everything was covered up. Just make sure they give you a XXXL.
