Question:
Lots of pain...no insurance?

Shortly after surgery (open RNY 10/22/02) I lost my job with my health insurance. Even picking up COBRA was not an option I could afford. Luckily, I got three free months of follow up care with my surgeon. I am now 3.5 months post op and having a lot of stomach pain (right side) for the last two weeks. I have no insurance and can not afford to see a doctor. I live in NJ and called Social Services hoping they would have a short term low cost option for me. Unless, I have children, which I don't, I don't qualify for any state aid. I still have not found a job and my husband has a full time job that is not offering insurance. Has this happened to anyone? What if I have a serious problem that shouldn't be let go? Any suggestions? The pain is not food related, because it doesn't get any better or worse when I eat or don't eat. I am having regular bowel movements. Thanks for any help.    — J. W. (posted on February 21, 2003)

I would recommend that you call your surgeon and explain the situation. He may be willing to help at least figure out what is going on. If not, ask him for advice on what to do. The other option is to go to a public hospital emergency room. I believe that in most states they are not able to turn anyone away for inability to pay. They may be able to set up a payment arrangement for you.
