Question:
I am four days post op (had my surgery Wed morning and it's now Sun afternoon)

I have developed a cold - how delightful. NOT! Anyway, just wanted to know if anyone had any advice on how to make myself feel better, at a time where I already feel crumby. I checked with the Dr.'s office about echanacia (my usual attach for colds) and they nixed that - thins the blood, and as I'm already on Fragmin, they don't want that happening. They recommended any of the Tylenol products - I have NyQuil, which I'll use tonight before I go to bed, but I just CAN'T wait for the coughing to start - it's already so painful on my incision just with little coughs... Anyway, and input would be appreciated. Thanks!    — johanniter (posted on February 9, 2003)

Before and during a cold I use Zicam nasal gel. It lessens the duration of the cold. I also use large amts of Vit C but I would check with the dr about that. Tylenol Children's cold is usually okay but check the sugar content. I believe they have a sugar free cough syrup for children.

Karen, Watch the alcohol in Nyquill. I can't take it because of that. Halls makes sugar free cough drops which you could hold in your mouth, BUT please don't swallow them. If you develop a cough, wear your binder and hold a pillow to your abdomen to help the pain. Good luck.

happy new birthday!! robitussin makes a diabetic cough syrup that u can get otc. tastes nasty but works very well. there is also a diabetic cough syrup called DIABETICTUSSIN. this too is nasty tasting but, not as bad as the robitussin. it works very well also & doesnt contain any artificial anythings! no alcohol, coloring etc. i think there were 7 ingredients NOT in the formula that most other cough syrups do contain. feel better hun.

Zicam is great. It's a naturapathic remedy. Most drug stores or groceries with a health food section carry it. It comes in a gel on a stick you put in your nose, so you don't have to swallow anything. It helps the congestion and helps you get better quicker.
