Question:
Almost six weeks post op and I'm having ear pain

I dont know why, but after I had my surgery I started to get an earache in my right ear. I went to my own doctor who gave my prescription for Zithromax. It started to go away but then it came back, not only does it hurt but it seems like its blocked and, this is going to sound strange, but I can hear the blood rushing in my ear. I did go back to the doc and he did check my ear again and he said everything looked good, so I wonder what's going on? Has anyone that's had the surgery had this problem afterward? This is probably all coincidence. This is really weird Ive never had anything like this before.    — Kris T. (posted on February 28, 2003)

It sounds like you may have an ear infection or a blocked eustachian tube. I get these about 3 times a year. My ENT doctor told me to keep the fluid moving through the ear to hold my nose and blow (so your face looks like a blowfish) and this will open up the ear canal. Just don't get carried away and blow TOO hard!!!

recently we heard of a method you find in the health food store. it is a candle remedy for your ears. sounds a little scarry, but it is not and it really works. i didn't want to try it until i couldn't take the pain anymore. relieves pain and has been used for years by old timers. won't believe what comes out. worth a try.

Hi there. I don't want to be rude to anybody, but my PCP has said that ear candling is just a huge scam and can actually be dangerous. Here is one particular website that supports this belief: http://www.quackwatch.org/01QuackeryRelatedTopics/candling.html

You're right, it is just a coincidence as for the timing. But you do have an infection somewhere. I'd recommend seeing an ENT (ear, nose, throat) specialist. I know what you mean about thinking you hear the blood rushing in your ear. It's probably not blood, but trapped fluid. If anyone has ever REALLY explained how the ear works, it's pretty amazing how everything is connected. It could be sinuses and this type of doctor can give you the best advice. Be sure to let him know what medicine(s) you've tried already. Good luck...
