Question:
What do you do?

This is problary a dumb guestion. What do people do when they get home from the hosptial. I drive myself crazy just being in bed all day. Can i pick up the house a little bit ( not strenuous of course) does it hurt to sit up? Any info post surgery will be great. Thanks Jenn    — [Anonymous] (posted on June 13, 2001)

Week 1, I spent mostly sleeping, wandering around the house, and walking. Week 2, I was going out for walks 4 times a day, cleaned the house, went shopping and was still pretty bored so I started taking conference calls from the office at home, and doing my email. By Week 3, I decided I liked the life of leisure, spent way too much time watching day time talk shows. And then I was back at work. Kate

Following a lap RNY, I was told that I could resume any activity that I wanted, but to limit lifting to no more than 15 pounds for the first month post-op. I did light housework, laundry, short walks and drives, caught up on alot of reading, and took several naps a day during my first week home. I returned to work 8 days post-op, but have an office position which worked out well for me. I think you'll find that you tire easily and require more sleep than usual, so allow yourself the opportunity to get plenty of rest and relaxation. Folks who over-do in the early stages often "pay for it" in terms of fatigue and depression later on. Listen to your body....it will tell you when to slow down or move ahead. Good luck!

Jenn: GET UP! Actually, I believe you will do more harm laying in bed than not! Move around. Walk in your house, in your garden, to the mailbox, whatever. Don't lift over 10 pounds or do other exercise besides walking. You can cook, do laundry if you don't pick up a heavy laundry basket. Put dishes in dishwasher. Take naps though as your body needs rest to recooperate. Have fun and watch the fat melt away.

I went back to work three days after I got out of the hospital. Stuck to light duty - computer, answering phones, and left the lifting and other physical stuff to the wonderful friends that offered to help me out at my business. Went home each night and collapsed. I think if I would have stayed home in bed I would have gone nuts.
