I had to lose weight and found the Atkin's works great. It's quick and you can actually eat a lot of food. I still use it if I gain a few pounds and I'm 3 years out. I can lose a pound a day and by day 2 the cravings are gone. Good Luck!!

I agree about using the Atkins diet. How quickly do you need to lose it?

I've been reading about the "South Beach Diet" It's not as restrictive as Atkins but works just as well. Have you thought about looking for a different doctor? I really don't understand these doctors sometimes. If it were that easy to lose 50 pounds I for one would not have needed to have surgery at all.

I was also told to lose 50 lbs. before surgery. The dr. could not give me any reason I felt was valid and I spent months trying in vain to lose weight. I finally changed doctors.

Try Richard Simmons's Tapes. I love walking with his tapes they helped me to build up strength and breathing before the surgery and I use them now. He is not a fan of WLS but I am a fan of his Exercise and Walking Tapes. I went from 345 to 280 with his tapes and a low carb high protien diet. If you don't use him use something to get moving and losing.

I was not required to lose weight for surgery by I wanted too anyway because my BMI was high and I wanted to see if I could get some of it off so that I would not have to lose so much after surgery. I did the Adkins diet and stayed in the first phase where you stay under 20 carbs. I have lost 41 pounds since I started in May. Hope this helps

Change doctors --if I could have lost 50 lbs before sugery I probably would not of had surgery. Do you have a Bariatric Treatment Center in your area? Get a doctor that doesnt make you feel worse or jump through hoops.

Eat green and white. All white meat and green vegetables. It is pretty BORING but it works. Good Luck to you! Although I must agree with a previuos poster... why do you have to lose 50 lbs before surgery? If you could do it on your own then you would not need surgery.

MY DOCTOR ADVISED THAT I TRY TO LOSE AS MUCH WEIGHT AS POSSIBLE BEFORE SURGERY AND HE GAVE ME TWO REASONS. 1) SINCE IT IS MY INTENTION OF HAVING RNY LAP, I HAVE A GREATER CHANCE OF NOT HAVING COMPLICATIONS AND HAVING TO SWITCH TO OPEN IF I LOSE WEIGHT, AND START CORRECTING MY FATTY LIVER. 2) IT HELPS YOUR RECOVERY. IF YOU START ELIMINATING YOUR FOOD INTAKE, AND WHAT TYPES OF FOODS NOW, AND CUT OUT THE POP AND SUGAR NOW, YOUR "MOURNING" PHASE WILL NOT BE NEARLY AS BAD, AND YOUR BODY WILL BE HEALTHIER, AND IT WILL BE EASIER TO RECOVER. HE ADVISED LEAN FOR LIFE, AND I HAVE BEEN ON IT SINCE JULY 8 AND LOST 13 POUNDS. I DRINK @ 140 OZ OF WATER A DAY AND STARTED EXERCISING. I WOULDN'T SWITCH DOCTORS--I FEEL THAT THEY ARE NOT TRYING TO MAKE YOU A FAILURE AGAIN, THEY ARE JUST TRYING TO MAKE YOU THE HEALTHIEST YOU CAN BE SO YOU HAVE A GREAT RECOVERY, AND A SUCCESSFUL JOURNEY. GIVE IT A TRY!

One of my freinds lost 69# pre-op by drinking 4 protein shakes per day (30g each, high protein, made with water), avoiding milk & sugar, and doing 2-3 SENSIBLE meals per day. What is sensible? Meat, carb, veggie, normal fat (not high fat). Her surgery was almost a "walk thru".

Hi Selinda Ask your PCP for a referral to a endocrindologist who specializes in weight loss and nutrition programs. Due to my co-morbids I need to lose weight because I was rejected by two hospitals. Right now I'm on a physican's monitiored protien sparing diet. I'm working with a nurtitionist as well as the doctor. I so pleased we my progress. Since May 5th, I've lost 23lbs.
