Question:
Pain that feels like gallbladder but had GB removed a week ago

Help! I'm waiting to hear back from my doc. I had my gallbladder removed a week ago because I was having what was assumed to be gallstones/attacks and the ultrasound showed gallstones. Last night I went to the ER because I had the same attack but worst. It started at my sternum burning and pain and radiated to my back, tightening and hurting under my ribs, hard to breath. It also felt like something was going right through my stomach to back. Could this have been something I ate? I didn't really feel nauseaus, just a little from the pain. I did have some popcorn, but not each time I've had an attack. THis is about the fourth time it's happened but worst each time. Had anyone experienced this? Do you have any ideas? Thanks!!    — themperrys (posted on January 31, 2003)

There are sometimes when I feel I have a GB still- as the pain is similar. I have read about this and I do believe it is normal. The pain is not so bad as you get further out. I could be dreaming this, but I THOUGHT it was because some stuff can still get stuck in the cavity that once lead to the GB. That although the GB is gone, there is still a way to have the pain... I only get it once in a great while- but you know the pain and it is not something easily misinterpreted!

Back in 98 I went to the emergency room & they said I had a bad case of heartburn. So the gave me pain medicine & a prescription for heartburn relief. Then 3 nights later same kind of attck (always around 2-3:00am)I shot out of bed & could not catch my breath(like being stabbed right below breast).Back to the emergency room I went. This time they did a ultrasound & seen I was full of gallstones.Surgery was set up right away. Soon after surgey, any time I had anything greasy, the same feelings came back ( for about 6 months )Also any time I felt a BM their is really know waiting like before. Now its 2003,and I basically can eat anything with no problem. Hope this helped, and I wish you a speedy recovery.

[Original Poster] Thanks to all of you for responding. This gives me peace of mind that I'm not going to die if I don't go to the ER. :-) {I was unsure of that the other night.} I didn't know what was happening. Thanks again.

since you had a cholecystectomy (gall bladder removal) a week ago (but you failed to mention if it was performed laproscopically or open, you MIGHT have a residual stone blocking the common duct. it would be more likely IF the procedure was an open one, and if there were no preoperative studies (such as an ERCP) done. it could also, possibly, be pancreatitis. this is something which needs to be followed by the doctors.... if you have to wait, while you're in pain like this, you might consider waiting in the ER..... best of luck....
