Question:
bypass pain compared to gallbladder removal

I had my gallbladder removed lap. Oct 2001. How will the initial surgery pain relate to the gallbladder removal    — candylnd24 (posted on March 14, 2003)

Will your gastric bypass be lap? I had an open gastric bypass and a lap gallbladder removal 16 months later. The bypass hurt ten times worse. Six weeks before I felt comfortable as opposed to three days. If you are doing the bypass lap, it should not be as bad. However, the pain will still be a bit worse as you are still having your stomach cut open and your intestine bypassed. Plan on 3 weeks of a lot of discomfort lap or double that for open.

For me personally, Gallblader removal was worse. I had both surgeries LAP. I was not feeling well for at least a month after my gallblader was removed and was constantly in my surgeons office due to pain. Even the pain meds would not help. With my WLS, I was back to work in 5 days and felt almost normal after that. I did not have much pain at all. I did suffer from nausea, but it passed. I took the pain medication for maybe 1 or 2 days after I got home from the hospital. I was only in the hospital for two full days and one night. I guess everyone is just different. Good luck!

I had a lap gallbladder removal about a year before the lap RNY. I thought the surgery pain levels were similar and the recover time somewhat similar. What I was not prepared for was the awful trapped gas from the RNY. Lap surgeries require the doctors to blow up your insides with gas to give them room to work with. Sometimes the gas gets trapped and can take days to leave your body. With the gallbladder I had no trapped gas, with the RNY, I was in excruciating pain for a good 6-12 hours on day 2 post-op.

I went into my lap rny thinking I had done this once with my gallbladder so this should be a breeze...let's just say it wasn't quite as easy as I thought it would be. I had my lap gallbladder in 2/97 and had a HORRIBLE time with gas pains in my chest and shoulders, but was back to "normal" within a few days to a week. My lap rny 1/03 was a little more painful muscle/innards wise initially, but I did not have any of the gas pains that I had with the gallbladder, which was really nice. It also took a little longer to get back to normal with the rny...maybe 7-14 days before I could fully function (sleep on my sides, bend down and pick things up off the floor easily, lift/move heavy objects etc). Good luck with what ever you choose!

Hi Elizabeth, I had my gallbladder removed 1 month after my 2nd c-section and I feel having 3 abdominal surgeries prepared me for my lap RYN. It's hard to compare, the initial pain, I was lucky and did not have a great deal of pain (or it could of been the morphine pump!)with my bypass. But, you should understand the gallbladder surgery is a very simple procedure compared to Gastric bypass. Stay positive! you'll do great! Rose
