Question:
Did I dump?

WE went out to eat tonight at a buffet where I usually have a nice selection of "my" foods. Well, tonight they had boiled baby carrots, which I love I ate one, was okay, ate a second, and it tasted sweet...too sweet. They had added sugar. It no more than hit my stomach when I began to feel queasy. Then I broke out in a cold sweat and felt really weird for about 20 minutes. Needless to say, I could not finish dinner. At the end, I was in the bathroom--and after a loose stool, I felt fine. I have never dumped and I have never had a bit of sugar in my 14 weeks since surgery. Fats make me feel nauseated, so I limit them. Did I dump on these sweetened carrots? — Linda S. (posted on August 30, 2003)

Certainly sounds like it...JR

Sure sounds like dumping to me. My first experience with dumping was from a tomato based soup. Now that you know how unpleasant it is, you won't be tempted to push your luck, so to speak. Carrots are naturally sweet and adding sugar to them really over does it. I don't know about you, but I am so glad that I dump - makes me honest.

I also vote that it was dumping. You probably would have been fine if it didn't have the butter/sugar on it. It might have been a combo of too much sugar and fat. Next time just be a little more observant and things will be fine. I like cooked carrots also. Just stick to ones you know how they were prepared.

yup, you dumped. I dump on fats and carbs but not sugars.

Thank you so much for the descripton of Dumping! I am diabetic and have been eating some SF candy. I had almost the exact same symptoms after eating them, only with out the loose stool. I cannot say that I am "looking forward" to dumping, but I think that the symptom is another too for us to use. I am scheduled for open RNY on Sept. 3....I hope they don't change the date again!

Linda, in the half year I have been using a blood sugar monitor I've been nailing down the innocent looking little veggies that my body thinks are sugar bombs: carrots, peas, corn, potatoes (but not all root veggies). I'll probably continue to avoid those post-op.

Yes, I do beleive that is dumping. Remember that feeling. Hopefully you will learn from that like I haven't. :) My first dumping was with sugar free chocolate yogurt. My friend thought I was going to die. You will be just fine. Now you know what will make you sick. Just listen to your body. It will tell you if you are doing something wrong.
