Question:
Anyone else have problems with caffeine after surgery?

Although I am now two years post-op, I still cannot drink anything with caffeine without becoming sick! Have any of you had this problem with caffeine or other foods?? I still can't figure out why I had no problems with it until I had the surgery!    — T. 263 (posted on February 22, 2004)

I was told its possible to desentize ourselves to almost anything by doing the following. Day one just a tiny bite or sip of the food that causes the problem, day 2 just a bit more, and each day increase it. Keep it just under the amount that makes you ill. By GRADUALLY increasing the amount most can eat anything. This is largely how dumpers become non dumpers. NOT recommended for things like sugary foods that can cause weight regain.

My surgeon said no caffeine, so I really haven't indulged.

I always have a low-blood sugar attack (even before surgery) when I would drink a cup of coffee on an empty stomach. It's even worse now to deal with, because I have to get sugar right away, which if I'm not careful, I can dump from having too much. It's a no win situation, and I choose to skip the coffee altogether. Coffee also makes me nauseous now even when I have a little bit. I drink this great energy drink called V-16. It tastes like watered-down orange juice. It's a vitamin drink that will not cause any type of dumping or other problems, and I swear by it. It's wonderful as a pick me up. I get it from my osteopath, but I would think you could find it online or at a heatlh food store. It's made by Advocare and is called Volkov's V-16. Each wafer costs about $1 (which is one serving). I also have a problem with raisens, soft egg yolk and any type of food with tomato sauce. The raisens and egg yolk cause terrible gut pain, and the tomato sauce causes nausea. No idea why, never had a problem before surgery.

Like the dumping mechanism, this might be to your benefit - caffeine causes dehydration. So not being able to tolerate it is a blessing in disguise.
