Question:
When is it time to have an endoscopy performed?

Im 5-6 weeks out and still have a problem with vomiting. I dont throwup after every meal but it does seem to be getting worse because now I seem to vomit up solids whereas earlier it was just fluid. I realize that this could be due to me eating too much, too fast but Ive also read posts from people who said that all their vomiting problems cleared up after they found out they had an ulcer. How would I know if its an ulcer or not.    — [Anonymous] (posted on November 29, 1999)

It does sound to me like you need an endoscopy. The main reason is that it sounds like your problem is progressive -- that is, getting worse -- and you don't want to wait until yoiu can't hold anything down at all. If you have an ulcer they will find it during the endoscopy. Good luck!

It's also possible that you have developed a small stricture. It's definitely time to check in with your surgeon and go from there. I had similar symptoms and ended up doing the barium swallow. They found a small stricture, but the surgeon didn't want to do the endoscopy in fear of tearing open the surgery sites. So, my surgeon suggested I wait it out and it cleared itself up within a month's time.

I'm pre-op but have had several endoscopys done -- first to see if I had an ulcer, then to see if it was gone, then a year later to see if it was back, etc. I finally got smart (after paying for & enduring the tests)-- if you do have an ulcer, how will they treat it? Pepcid? Axid? Mylanta? Try that for a few weeks and if it doesn't clear up - -then have the endoscopy! Hope this helps, Toni
