Question:
Shoulder. Has anyone experienced shoulder pain after having open RNY? The pain in on the front

of my left shoulder and the only thing that lessens the pain is to keep it iced down..    — cbellan (posted on June 5, 2000)

Don't know how far post op you are, but right after surgery I had shoulder pain and my doctor said it had to do with the retractors he used (open RNY 5-1) Obviously, ask your surgeon if you continue to have problems though. Good luck

I am 5 wks post-op from RNY. I too am experiencing pain. Mine has been in the front where the retractors where and also in my upper back. Doc says it is residual pain from the front spreading in the back. He put me on some muscle relaxers (Flexoril) as my muslces are extremely tense. (I am no longer taking any othe pain meds.) This med seems to be working pretty good for me. Before getting this med I was unable to sleep at all because I was too uncomfortable. You should talk to your doctor and see if he can give you something.

Caroline, Oh....the shoulder pain, like the others have said, it is probably from the retractors used during surgery. I am almost 5 mo. post-op and finally feeling some relief. My pain was mostly in the back of my left shoulder. As you start feeling more mobile, and can excercise some, the pain lessens. Good luck. I feel for you. Open RNY 1-11-00 down 72# Shoulder pain and all....It's worth it! Dani

Hello.. I had pain in my shoulder too.. but I realized that I used my arms ALOT to lift and reposition myself in order to take pressure off of my stomach muscles... just a thought... Take Care Of You and Hope It gets better... :-)
