Question:
3 1/2 years post op - bad abdominal pain....

I started at 260 5'6" and have been bouncin' between 180-200 for about two years...losing weight is such a struggle for me...even if I follow the pouch rules... I've never had any problems with my bowels since my surgery (or even before) until about a two months ago. I ended up getting really bad abdominal cramps - sometimes it was the point of putting my in tears and I could not stand up straight. Well it passed after a few days...and I was good and now for the past couple weeks i've been struggling with having bad abdominal cramps again, constipation, and burping a lot. Right now I feel so miserable, I can't even stand up straight. I have had no complications since my surgery...and i'm not even sure if this is caused by it...but was wondering if anyone has had the same symptoms. I still have my gall bladder... my surgery was an open RNY...Thanks....    — Jonna M. (posted on January 22, 2005)

Hi there well I can certainly empathize with you on this one. I had a similar problem with pain and I went to my doc thinking I had an ulcer or something. Well, they did an xray and come to find out my bowels was very backed up with fecal matter. It was so bad it was backing up into my stomach. I was impacted and I am working now on getting all of this corrected. Please have it checked out. I never would have thought that this was the source of my pain but it was. I hope this helps~ Shelia

It sounds to me like you might have adhesions around your surgery site. I would definitely go see your doc. This could be a potentially serious problem and cause a bowel obstruction. Good Luck and God Bless Love Jo

Girl, get to your doctor! I had similar symptoms and it ended up being a small bowel obstruction. Mine happened at 2 years post-op. Bowel obstructions are particulary hard to diagnose in gastric bypass patients because we basically have two sets of intestines. If the "classic" symptoms of SBO are absent (no BMs or gas passing and or vommiting) the docs tend to not think SBO. BUT, we can still have a SBO in the bypassed portion of our intestine without exhibiting the no BM, no gas passing, etc signs. My pain hit me in the morning around 8:30, by noon I was in the ER on IV morphine. They did the tests and thought it was "just" my gallbladder. It wasn't until they went in to take that out that they found the SBO. My advice is to call your surgeon AND go to the ER.
