Question:
Is Coral Calcium a good option?

I've been to a few vitamin stores recently who have tried to sell me Coral Calcium. They say that it is absorbed almost immediately and more thoroughly than even calcium citrate. Is this true for us? If Michelle is reading this question, what do you think?    — cjabates (posted on April 25, 2003)

It is my understanding that Coral Calcium is just another form of calcium carbonate and, if it is, it will be just as useless to us as Tums or Viactiv or blackboard chalk as far as a calcium supplement for us post-RNYers...JR

John is right; coral calcium is simply calcium carbonate (and grossly overpriced calcium carbonate, at that). If you check the AMOS library, there are some prior Q&A threads on this with links to articles about coral calcium.

Dead animal bones. Like oyster shell, like the sheetrock on your wall, it contains calcium, but it doesn't mean a human body can absorb it. Doing what I do, I get free bottles & literature trying to convince me to sell it. Make big bucks! Get rich quick! I have to shake my head at the morality of it all. I hope the stuff is not hurting my sewage system.
