Question:
Has anyone experienced a reduction in pain following surgery?
I have a lot of back and leg pain, especially lower back and knee pain. I am hoping to see a reduction in pain, because I won't be able to take a lot of pain medication following the RNY surgery. Are there any positive comments related to pain reduction? What medications are good for arthritis and general pain? — Peggy51 (posted on April 30, 1999)

I take plaquenil for my arthritis. It is a prescription from the arthritis
doc. It doesn't irritate the stomach at all. And mine gets irriated at
ANYTHING. Always did.
I use Pain Free and lots of natural products for arthritis and other muscle
problems. The pain in the pouch is WAY worse than teh joint pain if you
get silly and eat ibuprofen or aspirin or motrin or naprosyn or whatever.
Don't even THINK it!

You will have a great deal of pain with your lower back and legs until you
lose at least 50 pounds. Once you start walking, begain slowly, you will
start feeling some releive. I have severe lower and back pain, and when I
lost 100 pounds I was amazed how much better I feel. The best medicine for
the pain is Motrin. Soma, which is a muscle relaxant is very addicting and
so is vicodin. The doctors perscribe these medications a lot and they are
hard to get off of. The only thing with Motrin, is you have to quit it
about 10 days before surgury because it can cause you to bleed internally.
I hope this helps you, and If wish you the best. You may e-mail me back if
you have any other questions.

Hiya. You bet. I was 400 pounds before surgery and everything hurt.. yes,
particularly lower back, legs and my knees (which are somewhat arthritic).
I've lost almost 100 pounds so far (whew) and in the last two months I have
been almost pain free. I still have some lower back spasms, some of that is
due to relearning my posture. And one knee is a problem and will have some
therapy soon. But I feel 20 years younger (in fact, 20 years ago I didn't
feel this good). I hate to subscribes to crazes, but MSM was recommended to
me before surgery to help incision healing (along with Vitamin E, C, and
Selenium) I took 1,000-2,000 mgs a day til surgery and even my surgeon was
impressed with how well I healed. Now I've read the Miracle of MSM which
reads a little hucksterish, but I have started taking again (now that
swallowing pills is easier) and I feel an improvement from that too. Before
surgery I was on the verge of giving away my beloved dog because I couldn't
walk half a block. Now we walk a mile every day.
After surgery, no anti inflammatories of NSAIDS are allowed and Tylenol
sucks. Your doc can prescribe a low level pain reliever if you need one.
Good luck. write me directly if you have more questions [email protected]

I had horrible knee and hip pain before my surgery. I weighed
about 370lbs at my highest. My joint pain was gone after the first
30lbs of weight loss. I can't explain it, as I know I had the pain at that
weight before. It is gone, and hasn't come back. I can exercise
and I like to exercise. IT DOESN'T HURT TO EXERCISE!

Before my surgery, I had back pain from standing, walking, and even
sleeping. You name it, it gave me lower back pain. Now I don't have back
pain any more. However, I still have some hip pain (not too bad, though)
when I exercise too much without stretching. I hadn't even thought about
the pain until I saw your e-mail. The surgery is that effective!
