Question:
How about spicy foods?

What about eating spicy foods that are low fat and surgerless? Do the spices bother you? I was thinking of Mexican food such as spicy chicken, fat free refried beans or salsa. Also, wouldn't the fat free beans be a good source of high protein?    — Jan B. (posted on August 20, 1999)

Spicy foods are not forbidden. You should go slow with all the foods you eat afterward and see how it goes. If you get heartburn or other problems, well then lay off that food for a couple of weeks then try it again. Some of my patients cant eat meat, others have trouble with eggs, others cant eat bread. The point is that everyone is different and you have to try the foods for yourself. No high calorie liquids, no junk foods, no ice cream or soda - these foods are bad for your nutrition and will prevent you from losing weight.

Both my doctor and his sidekick (who does the endscopies & such) say spicy foods are safe for our pouches. Personally, my TONGUE doesn't like 'em. But I love horseradish. Figure it.

Hi. I had my surgery in Oct. of 1998. I can eat or drink anything I want. It's not what you eat it's how you eat it. If I eat too fast or don't chew my food properly then I will get sick. Spicy foods don't bother me. Good luck.

Spicy foods don't bother me at all. At first one of the treats I got was Salasa. I put it on eggs or ate it with baked tortilla chips-but only a few. I couldn't tolerate Mexican foods until about after 8 mo. I have a 1cc micro pouch so I'm less tolerant than most when it comes to mixing foods. I can eat it now though with no problems.Spices never bothered me and Onions were always in my diet and they never bothered me.I use most things fat free but you have to watch the sugar content-they take out the fat and replace it with more sugar to make up for the taste. I am 16 mo post-op with -159#. Any more questions and I would be happy to answer you. Good Luck. Jan Terry

My doctor does not recommend spicy food until later on. Probably at least 6 months post op. Beans are probably okay but be aware that they cause gas and so you may not tolerate them well.
