Question:
Could someone give me a list of surgeons who do lap WLS in Massachusetts

I have an appt with Dr. Thayer at NWH on 7/3 but I have been told he does not perform lap WLS. I am going to keep the appt since I have been waiting since February but I think due to my work situation I would prefer the lap procedure to the open.    — Sandra D. (posted on May 21, 2002)

This list comes from Tanya Royer's profile: http://members.bellatlantic.net/~vze2c2m2/wls/wls_doctors.htm It may be outdated, but should give you a pretty good list. My dr was dr. Ameri in Stoneham, and I liked him very much. Another idea is to click on the "Find Peers" link, then click on MA. Look at the right column to see who had lap surgery, then check their profile to see who their doc was. Good luck and email anytime.

Update: after looking at my doc's listing on Tanya's webpage, the information isn't entirely correct. He operates out of many hospitals, since he is a general surgeon. As far as I know though, he only does lap rny at two of them: Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge and Winchester Hospital. This is because they're the only hospitals set up w/the special equipment required for lap surgery.

OK, I'm sure you're sick of me by now, but one more thing. If I had it to do over again, I would go w/Dr Kelly in Worcester. This is because while I liked my dr, his office staff lied to me. They told me I couldn't get a date even at the same time in Winchester Hospital as opposed to where mine was scheduled, Mt Auburn, but I found out that they did lap rny's at Winchester a full 2 weeks before my surgery. Also, I waited over a month after insurance approval to get a surgery date, and it was 5 months away. Someone else got theirs done in Winchester a day before mine, and they went for their consult a full 3 months after me. My insurance was approved in just 2 days, so that wasn't the issue either. Just thought you should know the facts.

I noticed that you are in Attleboro. I just had my surgery with Dr. Dieter Pohl in Johnston, RI. He performs his surgery at Roger William Medical Center in Providence which is probably 30 minutes from you..tops. Probably closer that Newton Wellesly where Dr. Thayer is located. I too wanted to be a part of Dr. Thayers huge cult following, but I truly wanted it done LAP. After I did some research I decided to meet with Dr. Pohl and he is fabulous. As a matter of fact, you can read my profile for more information. Not to mention, I think he is somewhere around a 3 month turn around from consult to surgery. Hope that helps.

I am a patient of Newton Wellseley.....and a patient of Dr. Thayers partner Dr Gazmuri. I had my surgery on Nov.8th 2001 and I am down 115 pounds. I know of 2 people that have had the same surgery down as a Lap procedure and they have not had the luck that I have experienced with my open procedure. They are constantly sick and in the doctor's office. It is my opinion that a surgery as cumbersome as Gastric Bypass... I would not want done through 4 tiny holes..... its just such a delicate procedure and the scar is really not that bad! Your in great hands with Dr Thayer and the gang at Newton Wellseley

First off, what is your work situation? I had the open RNY and I was back to work in 2 weeks from the surgery date. I work in an office. What kind of work do you do that you are worried about the open?

Dr. Lautz @ Beth Israel Hospital does Lap Procedures, but only on certain patients. He will not do a Lap on anyone with a bmi over 45, regardles of how much you weigh. I had my first consult with him last week and I am still waiting for his office to call me back though. Good luck, and if you have any questions, feel free to email me!

Drs. Shikora and Tarnoff both do LAP procedures at New England Medical Center in Boston. Mine was performed 1/14/02. They have a wonderful pre-op and post-op program, including small, individualized groups. It is NOT the place to go if you're looking to breeze into surgery without proper pre-op work-ups.

My lap RNY was on April 26 '02 with Dr. Ferguson at MGH. He and the other weight surgeons at MGH (Dr. Sheldon Randall and Dr. Janey Pratt) all do lap procedures, I believe; Dr. Pratt's on maternity leave, though, at the moment. I've had a great experience with the Weight Center there and would recommend it. Please e-mail me with any questions, and best of luck!
