Dr. Bertha was wonderful he made a point of reading my chart and memorizing my name before me mate. They have a very busy practice but I was still able to get that one on one personal attention from him. What I looked for most in any health care provider especially someone who will be altering my ananomy , is their years of experience and their professionalism, and a clean track record. And so far he as scored big on all counts , they do a lot of surgeries at the hospital and they have a very extensive practice. I reseached the program and they came highly recommended. Dr. Bertha took his time with me going over all of my options, and possible risk, he made his self and his staff available to me if I should have any other questions at any time. The staff was exceptional and let me tell you, my standards are pretty high. Every one knows Mary and Mary knows her stuff. They have a very good structured pre-op and post-op program.
While it's always great to have both surgical competence and bedside manner .For me "surgical competence" is "most" important to me.

Dr. Bertha was very informative about the procedure, and was very happy that I had done extensive research on all the procedures and knew what one would be best for me and my eating habits. All my paperwork was handed off to the office staff for submission to my insurance carrier. Seems like an organized office and efficient staff. Getting the staff on the phone can be a bit of a problem, but when you finally do, they are very pleasant and I got approved rapidly, so I guess I'm very happy. However, when people don't call me back, I find that very frustrating!!

I had my surgery by Dr. Bertha, through the Obesity Center at Morristown Memorial Hospital. Dr. Bertha was very caring and is extremely talented as a bariatric surgeon. I highly recommend him to anyone in the Northern New Jersey Area. The Obesity Center was also very impressive. Mary Meola, the nurse that handles all the appointments for the Doctor's there, is outstanding, helpful, and a pleasure to deal with. The Hospital has a wonderful support group that meets every 2nd Tues. of each month. I was surprised to see so many people at these meetings, but the need for this is so extensive. I heard so many success stories it was exciting. I had the first adjustable Lap-band surgery there on 4/17/01. It was research for the FDA, but know is approved by the FDA. I am feeling great. I went into the hospital on the 18th and came home on the 19th. Was back to work on the 4th day after surgery. Dr. Bertha and the group of Dr.'s at Morristown receive and excellent rating by me.

From everything that I have read about Dr. Bertha ( by actually emailing a couple of his patients)
He seems to be a really great surgeon from what everyone else has mentioned. I have an appointment with him on March 14th, and will post more after that date.
UPDATE: When I met Dr. Bertha back in March, my first impression of him was outstanding. He seemed calm, collected and most of all very attentive to everything that I mentioned about my reasons behind having the surgery, as well as the procedure, and everything that I had gone through with Dr. Greenbaum's office. Mary Meola was also a very nice lady. She explained everything, and was curtious. I feel in very safe hands with The Morristown Bariatric staff, and and delighted that I will be having surgery with them.

Dr. Nicholas Bertha was my surgeon and he has been great! He was very concerned about me and what I was thinking concerning the surgery. He makes sure he takes the time to really see how you're doing and answer any questions you or your family may have.

I'm very impressed with the program that Dr. Bertha and Dr. Abkin have set up (my daughter had the same surgery performed by Dr. Abkin). Their Program Coordinator, Ms. Mary Meola is wonderful. She's very knowledgeable about the surgery and ready to answer any questions the patient may have. They encourage the patient's family members participation. They make sure that each patient goes thru a thorough physical and mental review before surgery to make sure each patient is in the best possible health prior to surgery. Their after care has been very thorough also; bloodwork, nutrient concerns, etc. have been good. The response to my concerns have been taken seriously and calls were returned quickly.

I have only good things to say about Dr. Bertha, he obviously did a great job (I'm still breathing!) and has been a very kind, understanding and definitely skilled doctor. And I HIGHLY recommend Morristown Memorial Hospital, they took amazing care of me and made my stay very pleasant. --------------
I did call the NJ Medical Board before the surgery and asked about Dr. Bertha, and they said he was in good standing, has a clean record, is a laprascopic surgeon and also a member of the Association of Bariatric Surgeons.

I met with Dr. Bertha on 2/28/01. I heard him speak at the Support Group meeting on 2/13, and was anxious to meet personally with him. The 2/28 visit was myself, Dr. Bertha, and nurse Mary Meola. It was nice to get there and find them waiting for me! No hour-long waits in a overcrowded waiting room. Dr. Bertha answered each of my three pages of questions! I was pleased with the time spent with me and with the answers to my concerns. He and Mary were both very well versed in all aspects of the surgery, from the initial visit to follow up care. At no time did he downplay the seriousness of the surgery, but also made me feel confident that I should not be overly fearful. I feel that I have made the right decision with Dr. Bertha.

I cannot even begin to express how impressed I was with Dr Bertha and his associates. I attended the support meeting last night which is required for all their new patients. It was very well structured. It started with introductions and a slide show describing ALL the different types of surgeries. Then everyone was able to ask questions. After that, the guest speaker began. The speaker is different every time each covering various aqspects of the sugery. Last night's speaker was a counselor dealing with the emotional aspect which was very interesting.

My appointment was today. Again, I was impressed. I was taken back to Mary's office who is the nurse. She is so very helpful and..she had the surgery three years ago. Here is the amazing part! Dr Bertha came in, sat down, and talked to you! He actually took time out to find out about you. If any other surgeons get a chance to read this and think that bedside manner doesn't matter...THINK AGAIN! After talking for some time, Dr Bertha and Mary took you into a private room and I was given a physical. I felt 100% comfortable with this.
After I was given the okay, I was walked back to Mary's office, Dr bertha said "IT WAS NICE TO MEET YOU" and Mary spent some MORE TIME with me. Then, I got my surgery date. I apologize that this is long but it felt this was very important. Dr Bertha and his associates (there are 4 surgeons total) have 100% of my trust and support!
