Biliopancreatic Diversion with Duodenal Switch
Well My sugerons were Chris Sanborn(who is not on the list) and Preston Carter both from Madigan. I only talked to Carter a few times but Sanborn was great! He was very nice and checked up on me alot post op....he even played leaving on the midnight train to Georgia in the operating room...seeing how i'm from Ga....=)
Dr. Carter has been absolutely wonderful from start to finish. Everything went so smoothly, and I have had noproblems whatsoever. He has ben very supportive and helpful, and has always awnsered all my questions. He informed me of all the risks before the surgery, and refered me to a dietician for any additional help that I may need.
I realize that I am only one of his patients, but I like Dr Carter very much. He saved my life twice. My impression of him increased as he listened and helped me get through all this before a whole lot of dietary info was available. The staff was pretty good. The only thing I don't like is the lack of current access-but that has to do with the military insurance and not with Dr Carter. I think he is great and would highly recommend to anyone needing/wanting the surgery. At the time their wasn't any aftercare dietary wise available-it's been 4 1/2 years now and a support group was established as of today. He did address the risks of the surgery, and as miserable as I was it really didn't matter. Although I didn't really understand the actual changes that I would need to be making until afterwards. I would rate him a 10. For me both competence and bedside manner are important. I do understand that I don't have anything negative to say about him. He saved my life. The only negative thing I could say is that the staples used to close the incision were taken out too soon and it reopened-but that was minor compared to the good things that have happened. 200+ lbs ago.
I ended up having Dr. Watts as Dr. Carter was not in town
the day of my surgery. I met with Dr. Watts and he
explained everything to me and he did a great job
on my surgery. He came up and saw me every
day after my surgery and the staff was outstanding!!!!!!!!
I only had one bad nurse and she let my IV infiltrate my hand
which ended up being the size of a small grapefruit. Other
than that My surgical team was outstanding and the post-op
caregivers were exceptional.
Dr Carter was fantastic!! He is a very nice man and a very competant surgeon. However, since he had traveled to Washington DC to oversee the procedure by a surgeon there, I cannot tell you about his followup care or his staff. Dr. Carter stressed his belief in my success based on my determination and positive attitude. He helped me feel like I had control over my success. I really appreciated that.
The personnel that did immediate followup care were not used to patients who had this kind of surgery, but did a terific job taking care of me while they learned.
9 days after surgery I flew back to Albuquerque NM and my care has been taken over by the staff at the VA/AF medical center here.
I am flying back to Washington DC in October 2000 to check in with the surgeon that performed the surgery. I am already feeling better than I have in years. Its amazing!
I cannot tell you about the doctors in DC yet, because I do not know if they are ready to take patients on a regular basis yet. As soon as they give me the go ahead, I'll let everyone know. Right now, I would recommend this procedure to anyone that has tried diet and exercise and not had success.
Dr. Carter was very informative. The other doctors on his staff were kind and helpful.
I would recommend him and the surgery to every one . He makes sure that you have all your check ups and if you need help he gives it. I have lost 130 pounds in the first year without exercise. I feel that now i can exercise without killing myself in the process. If you have any questions just email me. glenda
