Mt. Diablo Medical Center Hospital
Several of the nursing staff were very helpful, but some of the CNA's were very rude when it came to my rest time. I was jam packed in a small room with a dear lady that had a hip replacement, so she had tons of equipment, visitors, and different specialists. Everything was shoved around my bed to make room for her to move around with the walker. When they would come into the room in th middle of the night to assist her to go to the bathoom, they turned the bright overhead light on over MY bed to allow for a non-glaring light for her. There was really no place for mu husband to sit and visit with me, so he stayed very little for the first 2 days. I was unable to get ANY rest in the hospital, so I was VERY happy to go home.
Except for the staff who must come in during each shift to take your vitals, I had a very pleasant experience. The staff was great, the food was better than I remembered. I must say though, because of it being an "older" hospital, it was hard to regulate my room temperature. But to have a room of my own, I am not going to complain. This hospital tries to give the WLS patients a private room, so unlike most of the hospitals and doctors I interviewed, I would go back to Mt. Diablo in a heartbeat.
I found this hospital and the staff to really support (and show a special interest) in their bariatric patients. The nurses were generally very attentive and some asked me to please send pictures so that they could keep track of my progress. I did have one negative 1st day post op experience with having to wait on a gurney for a post op upper GI. But, when I shared this information with both the WLS support nurse (Anne Timberlake) and my surgeon (Dr. Asbun) they were both incredibly responsive to affecting a change for future patients. The Weight Loss Center out of the hospital is fantastic. Scheduling pre-op tests was relatively a breeze and their attention to the overweight patient (right down to jumbo sized chairs in the waiting room) was impressive. The WLS center seems to have worked with all departments to stress special handling of overweight patients...I was even told by Anne the WLS RN (early in my journey) that if I ever encountered any negative experience from a WLS standpoint to report it the Center for immediate resolution.
Some nurses were friendlier than other. Lucked out - got a private room. Some responses to the "button" we slow. Their speaker system for my room was awful - gave a LOUD screeching sound when they hung up from answering my button call. Accidently had a bariatric bed in my room - switched to a regular bed and it was MUCH better!!!
